friday afternoon fun

….confession: that picture has NOTHING to do with what i’m about to talk about, but it fulfills the requirement that this friday afternoon post contain a “fun” element… so, here we go…

“…we are beckoned to bridge the growing gap between black intelligentsia and those who feel the effects of black-on-black violence, higher levels of school dropout rates and dangerous levels of inadequate health conditions.

Never before have we seen such a deep contrast within the African-American community. We can proudly point to the accomplishments of black authors, professors, businesspeople and politicians in a manner never before seen in America. But we must also realize the stark contrast between those Americans and others who’ve given up on the American dream and, in many ways, have given up on dreaming at all.

Over the past several decades, the widening of socioeconomic diversity within the black community has not built a bridge for an adequate flow of education, mentorship, community reinvestment and black solidarity.” — Lenny McAllister on the state of blacks in America

“I rock rough and stuff with my Afro Puffs” — rapper The Lady of Rage in her hit single “Afro Puffs”, 1994

so, i’ve noticed that the majority of women on fotki, particularly those who are very successful with their hair, are college educated, white collar professionals, college students, and women from other countries.

and i wonder why i don’t see more women who are not white collar professionals, have high school diplomas/GEDs, and are not from other countries.

which in turn makes me wonder: if relaxer use will, in fact, decrease sharply in the next several years, will relaxer companies then concentrate their efforts on lower-income black communities to keep business going?

    That’s deep! Great post.

I think that companies will focus on the market. For example in the 70′s the product to have was ‘afro sheen’ (I’m not a child of the 70s but my mom thought this stuff was the greatest invention ever). In the 90′s the product to have was Dark and Lovely or Motions relaxer.

If there is a natural movement you can look forward to Pantene substituting mineral oil with essential oils, labelling it natural and selling it to you :)

that is a deep thought. I am from AL and when I cut my hair in Jan. my people freaked. They love having straight long hair. Since I had this they thought I was losing my mind. My people will be getting perms for a long time. Will give their last dime for hairdo but no water in the house. Sad situation all away around.

First of all, LMAO at that picture!!! It reminds me of a time that my mom and I went to Six Flags when I was a little girl.

    …I digress…

To answer your question, yes I do think companies who market hair relaxers will heavily come for that community and any other community that wishes to give their money to the business. It’s the same thing with fast food eateries and liquor stores, for they’re all over the lower-income black communities.

Good question, I think that scenario is definitely a possibility. I also think that companies (if they’re smart) will sell what sells. If relaxer sales decrease in the future, I think it would do them some good to start making stuff that naturals use, especially if their company depends on it.

Wow. Great post. Gives you a lot to think about. I think that relaxer profits will take a dip in the future and companies will begin to market their still crappy products as “natural” to the natural market as it continues to expand. Like JC said, pretty soon Pantene and Herbal Essences will have their cheap version of a kinky-curly curling custard. LOL….

Great post! I do feel that many relaxer companies are going to focus on marketing towards those who are actually demanding their product. Which unfortunately are those who are stuck in the sense that perms are the only way and those who just choose to.

I believe that the chemical relaxer industry will begin to target lower-income Black women, because the advertisers have proven to be very successful at brainwashing people. People who are down and out and feel hopeless are the easiest targets. Can’t pay your bills? Feel awful? Well at least you don’t have to have any trouble with your hair! And I’ve noticed something in advertising as well: a lot of the commercials that have Black women in them (that happen to be products targeted to young White people) happen to be women with…*gasp* natural hair!! So that’s just an interesting little thing to take note of.
Aaand thanks to this blog I now feel like an ass with my fake hair on, lol. I have been getting more compliments than ever on my natural hair; people staring, admiring and wanting to touch it, lol. Thank you for being an inspiration! I can’t say this enough.. Your blog is AMAZING!!
