some weekend cuteness… natural hair at the prom

“My hair was in a bantu-knot out that had been stretched via the blowdryer only because I decided to cowash about two hours before prom (BAD IDEA) and didn’t have to time to do my usual banding method. It turned out better than I thought, and I added some hair jewels to snazz things up.” ~Raquel

I thought these photos were too cute :) I had to do an interview…

BGLH: How old are you now?
Raquel
: I’m 18 now – woo hoo!! My birthday was last month.

BGLH: How was your prom?!
Raquel
: Prom was THE BOMB! … I had LOTS of fun dancing (with any and everyone, lol), and felt sorry for some of my friends who were concerned about sweating out their hairstyles. The bantu knot-out turned into a shrunken fro, but I didn’t mind. Not to get corny, but being natural really impacts so many random areas of your life. I can’t imagine standing on the wall the whole night to preserve a straight ‘do – life is way too short!!

BGLH: How long have you been natural?
Raquel
: Technically, I’ve been natural my entire life… but I got into middle school, got my first press for 8th grade graduation, and the rest is history. I fell into a straight hair trap – I mean, I literally felt trapped and was very scared of seeing my naps. I pretty much flat-ironed EVERY SINGLE DAY, from 8th grade till the summer before junior year. It was breaking off, too, and stayed a little below shoulder length.

Then I joined the cross-country running team, found Nappturality.com and fotki.com, and decided that this was madness. I started to slowly trim off all the heat-damaged hair – I think I got the last of it last winter, so now I have a brand new head of hair.

BGLH: Do you know where you’re going to college?
Raquel
: Yes. I’ll be studying English and Secondary Education. I want to be a high school English teacher.

BGLH: Aahhh, the memories. I rocked a tragic coil out to my prom… and an equally tragic self-designed baby blue, satin mermaid pants-dress. (Don’t ask.) But you know what? I was feelin’ myself, and my 16-year-old self thought I was hot. I guess that’s all that counts :)

What are your prom hair memories?

OK, she is too cute! I am loving the natural hair with the dress and the positive attitude! I wore flat-twists in the front with a curly weave ponytail to my prom. I was natural underneath but trying to look "elegant" with the long Shirley Temple curls. lol. My dress and hair were hot though!

I didn't go to my prom. Just wasn't interested. (weird?…Nah) But, BGLH, I really need to see a photo of that blue mermaid pants-dress ;)

I had my hubby's sister put in microbraids for me a few hours before the prom. They came out lovely and unlike some of my girls I was not worrying about sweating out my style. I am the most boring one out of the group and I had to leave them b/c all they wanted to do was sit at the table and hate on other ppl. Anybody who goes to the prom knows that you put too much time, money and energy into it to just be sitting around. No! I had the desire to be seen. I went out there and danced like there was no 2moro. It was my senior prom and I went by myself for that reason. I wanted to enjoy myself and I did.

She is a cutie and her hair looks great. I think the dress compliments the hair perfectly. That is a nice wedding style too.

    @ G… LOL! I might be able to dig up a picture…

@ anonymous… yup. I didn't want to be like any of the other girls at the prom, so I had the novel idea of making the bottom of my gown into pants instead of a skirt. And the pants kinda had a flare to them. Man, I was feelin' myself though. I actually got a few compliments on the pants-dress. lol!!

What a cute style and lovely prom photos!

This post SO takes me back to prom, it was 10 years ago for me. I am a BIG dancer but didn't want to mess up my press and curl that I had rocked since childhood. So I had my hair dresser do flat twists in the front and shirley temple curls in the back. My hairstyle lasted but I couldn't break it down on the dance floor the way I wanted to, lol.
