Does the “big chop” work on oval-shaped faces??

Wow, y’all have been really active sending in questions, news alerts and thoughts. Keep ‘em coming ;) This question was submitted by BGLHer Crystal.

“My name is Crystal and I have a question… With an oval shaped face should I have my hair cut short or should I wait to grow it out? I would really like to cut it in upcoming January, but I am thinking that I will look like a boy. Do you have any suggestions?”

The oval face is the most versatile face shape. Of course, short cuts work. I’m oval-faced, and my BC has suited me!

If she thinks her BC is plain, she can spice it up with accessories. I used to make a side part and use tortoiseshell clips on the sections that formed the part. It was cute and different. Now, I just sport it plain.

I really think you will be fierce with short hair! don’t think too much and don’t be afraid! i had the same question and thought i would look like a boy with short hair but it has nothing to do with the shape of your face or the lehgth of your hair. YOU LOOK LIKE A GIRL SO YOUR HAIR WON T TRANSFORM YOU INTO A BOY! keep it in your mind!

    Why not.

You’ll look great with short hair. I have an oval-ish face and I rocked my TWA. In fact, when I have purposely had short hair at least three different times before then. As french girl said, short will not transform you into a boy!

Definitely cut it! I think it will really look nice on you!

i have an oval face and i BC in Sept. my mother always says wear big earrings, because I told her I felt like I loked like a boy. I think that it was all just insecurities, on my part. Everyone knows I not a boy. just a girl with a MEAN shape-up that looks better than half my male counterparts! lol

    Hey guys,
Feel free to make use of the forum to post photos of your TWAs.

Honestly, any type of style looks good on oval shaped faces. Just google it lol. Women with oval shaped faces are able to get away with a lot of different styles, relaxed or natural.

I did the BC and I consider my face to be oval-shaped. It looked fine and I loved rocking it that short!

The oval shape face actually looks good with all hairstyles be it short, long, pixie, etc. I think it’s the only face shape that can pull off any length and still look good, imo. So I think you will look good, and you don’t have manly features so no one can mistake you for a boy…. : ).

I absolutely adore the Mario shirt! I definitely think you transition styles are cute!!!! About the big chop… I guess it depends on how short you go. For an oval shaped face I would suggest not going too short because it’s best to have some hair to highlight the cheek bone area or have some type of eyebrow grazing bang. Well this is just my opinion hope it helps!

Crystal, If you want to do the bc then go ahead and do it. Don’t worry about the shape of your face. All you need is self-confidence to pull it off.

  14. Monet 16 December 2009 at 12:08 pm Permalink

Absolutely. Oval faces can make pretty much any haircut or style work. I know that “best hair for face shape” articles will say to avoid short cuts if your hair is curly. They’re not talking about the glorious, more tightly curled coils that many black women have.
I say go for it. And if you feel that, as your hair grows out more, it’s adding too much weight up top (it won’t though– I have oval face shape too and I BC’d a few years ago… sorry, no pics), wear dramatic earrings.

Go for it! From the pics posted, I think you’ll look beautiful. All the short haircut will really do is show off your lovely features.

I really don’t know my face shape most days I think round others sort of oval. With my twa what worked for me was having a little height on the top and low cut sides. LOL I didn’t care much for my twa when it was all round because I liked how the height seemed to maybe lengthen my face and cheekbones more. I have to add I also added color *copper looking* so that also drastically changes your look. :-) Confidence was the sexiest accessory I could add though so when you know you look good it shows and “nobody can’t tell you nothing nah uhh” LOL

The Big Chop is all about you, your hair and your comfort zones with your hair. Some people are happy to big chop to an inch of hair, others prefer to BC at shoulder or neck length. You have to decide what the right time would be for you. Could you be a long-term transitioner? I only ask because you wondered if you may look like a boy with a BC and oval face. Ovals have the most options with hairstyle. Your concern makes me wonder if you might be more comfortable with longer hair?

Those who do the BC to short lengths usually feminise their wardrobe or arm themselves with an accessory collection that will help to soften the severity of very short hair. I never wore any hair flowers or coloured clips etc. I wanted to get used to my hair being very short without aids so I would appreciate it more when it grew out.

To my eye, you would not look like a boy with short hair but I think you’d suit hair flowers, scarves in pretty colours and cute dresses. The beauty of BC hair length is that you are surprised when it progresses and you appreciate your hair so much. It also brings out all your best features (you seem to have some cheekbones). If you are one of those people who changes style from week to week and loves big hair then a TWA may not be for you.

Actually in most of the magazines I’ve read, its been said that an Oval face is the ideal face because you have more options of hairstyles. Some face shapes don’t look good with certain parts or volume, but an oval shape can pull anything off. A Big Chop isn’t mandatory though for being natural. You don’t have to get one if you don’t like.

The nice thing about doing the big chop for any woman, is that we will be able to really see your beauty. Your high cheek bones beautiful eyes lips everything! When I did my big chop everyone was like WOW I can really see you for the first time!! I loved it!

Are you kidding? Oval shaped faces are the most versatile not to mention you have gorgeous features! Go for it! Start the year off naturally fabulous! :-)

I think you should do it girl!! =). I agree with Bianca. Your true beauty really has a chance to shine when you have a short cut, and you start to blossom with your hair. With those beautiful high cheekbones and full lips of yours, I highly doubt that anyone will be mistaking you for a boy, hehe. I am sporting a short cut btw, and I love it, as does everyone else =). Good luck.

I think oval faces post big chop are very stunning. What will happen is your eyes will become the center of attraction on your face with men and women noticing how pretty they are as if they never noticed before. Can’t wait to see it. Stay blessed and love yourself

I have an oval shaped face and I rocked my bc w/ pride and received countless compliments too. Oval shaped faces are the more versatile of them all and can wear pretty much every length and style well. Do it don’t be afraid you’ll look fierce. I even died mine red to make it a little funkier…it was hot.

I see no boy in that face. Go on and cut that hair.

If you’re unsure about whether or not a style will look good on you then you could try on a wig to see it first. As for the big chop, if you’re having apprehension about doing it I’d say to wait. It’s something that nobody else can tell you when it’s time to do..

Hey I have that Super Mario shirt but its short sleeve! But I really think you will look cute! I thought my head was too big to BC but it was just fine!

i have an oval shaped face with no cheeks and high cheek bones..to be honest i looked a lot like my brother after my bc (i had 3 inches of natural hair) but you look like you have a more feminine face, so it should work..:D

You have a pretty face & the perfect shape for any style!
Listen to the others who have already posted…you can definitely rock the twa.
I’m doing the same thing in a couple of months, when (hopefully) it won’t be as cold out here in VA.

    Good luck! ;)

I have an oval shaped face too and I was scared of looking like a boy too but I looked hot with my BC. I think my cheekbones made me look girly. I think the oval shape is the face shape that looks good with most styles so don’t be scared!

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR COMMENTS. I NOW HAVE CONFIDENCE TO DO IT. MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE RELAXED HAIR AND THEY THINK THAT GOING NATURAL IS STUPID! I’M GLAD THAT I HAVE YOU GUYS TO SUPPORT ME IN WHAT I DO. MY GRANDMOTHER AND MY FATHER THINK THAT LONG HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL AND I HONESTLY THINK OTHERWISE. THANK YOU AGAIN, AND I WILL BE DOING THE BC IN UPCOMING JANUARY!!

I’ve done the “big chop” 6 times, but this time around I am transitioning all the way out with length (trim, cleanse and condition)

  34. df 25 November 2011 at 1:40 pm Permalink

TWA can look good on anyone, you just have to style it to fit your face shape. I’m not sure what shape i have but I have a pretty strong jaw and fairly strong bone structure and I thought I’d look like a man :(

When I wore it out for the first time, my parents told me i looked beautiful for the first time in forever when I first sported my twa and my mom wanted to even chop all her hair off LOL (they aren’t mean, they just usually doesn’t compliment anyone like that — they usually just says “oh that really fits you”) I just played with my hair and ended up with a tapered twa which is very flattering for me. You just have to work with it like you would any other style.
