Question of the day: Salon roll call!**Update! BGLH now has a salon page!

***Update***

Yes folks… I compiled all your responses into a directory of BGLH approved, natural-hair-friendly salons. Check it out HERE. I would love to regularly update this list, so if you have any additions, hit up the comment box.

This question of the day was sent in by BGLHer Wande:

“I’m basically transitioning to natural hair. I haven’t permed my hair in almost a year and all I rock is weaves (sew-ins). But after much debate I’m gonna do the big chop this summer once I’m done for the semester in May. My problem is finding a salon to cut my hair. I don’t know many places around my school except for the Dominican spots and I recently moved to a new city back home so I don’t know where anything is! So, how do I go about find a salon that can do the BC for me?”

Wande is currently attending Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey. So please speak up if you know of any spots around there.

I’m also going to expand this to anywhere in the country/world.

Please respond with where you live, and which salon gets the BGLH stamp of approval. Also let us know why you’re referring that particular salon.

I’m in NJ in Irvington. You can catch the PATH from JC to Newark and a bus from there.

I see Kathy at New U but there are different stylists who work with a variety of hair types and textures.

Great minds think alike cause I was going to do this on my blog. Anywho, another one for BK (Brooklyn) is Evolutions Green Room Salon. It is a bit pricey, but they KNOW what they are doing. Funny, I just uploaded my bad salon experience in Philly…lol

I’m probably the only one in this neck of the woods, but I’ve got two in Mobile, AL.

Michael’s Hair (700 South Broad; (251) 433-4160) is my go-to for trims (which I only get, like, 3 times a year, but still). Michael cuts it dry, and always tells me how much needs to be cut and how he’s going to cut it. I heard about him from my mom. I sport collar bone length curls and my Mom’s been rocking a TWA for years; he’s great with both our lengths. He also does cornrows, twists, etc., but as I do my own protective styles, I don’t know how good he is with those.

Healthy Beginnings (66 North Sage Avenue;(251) 478-2290) is one of the few places I know of that will still do a press. I’ve been seeing Nikki there off and on for about 6 years, and she’s never done me wrong. I don’t heat style myself (I’m rubbish at it), but when I need to go stick straight, she’s there for me. And even in high school when I was seeing her every other week, she deep conditioned me when I got too dry and never burned the curl out of my hair.

Like I said, I’m probably the only reader in this area of the country, but maybe not! Hopefully these will be of use to someone.

Hey Frankie! Thanks for the recommendation; I’m actually from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and I had no idea that there were good natural hair places in this area. I mostly do my own protective styles or go to regular hairdressers who burn the curl from my hair whenever I get it straightened (around 3 times a year), so I really appreciate the info. And you’re not the only reader in this area of the country! Lol.

I go to Dickie at Hair Rules Salon in NYC. He is fantastic! He is a bit pricey ($180 for a cut & style), but the experience makes it soooo worth it. I’m from DC, but I go all the way to ny to get my hair done by him because he’s just that good! My favorite part of the appointment is when he applies essential oils to my scalp and hair, gives me a scalp massage, & puts me under the dryer to deep-condition. My hair comes out feeling soooo soft & all the essential oils are like aromatherapy!

I transitioned for about a year by getting senegalese twists. When I went to him I had inches of natural, dry curls and inches of straight relaxed hair on the ends. He cut away all the straight ends, moisturized it fully, & gave me a gorgeous natural curly fro.

Check out his website & definitely try his products. I swear by them to keep my hair moisturized & styled without too much effort. hairrules.com

    Help!
I have been wondering about this, myself.
If anyone knows a spot in the Orlando, FL area, please let me know.
The last time I moved to Orlando, I got fed up with my hair and ended up relaxing it again (Lord help me!).
Now that I’m back at a good 2.5 years of growth, I’m looking for someone to help me figure out these textures on my head and get a styling break.
    Any suggestions?

Wow! Glad to see someone else from lower Alabama on here! My hometown is about an hour from Mobile(and one of my best friends goes to USA). I’m off at school but I might need a place to go when I’m home. :)

  23. Sharon 15 December 2009 at 10:36 pm Permalink

    Hey Franki,

I’m from Mobile, too. I used to go to Sonyia at Healthy Beginning when I got my relaxer. I’d only had Nikkita do my hair once or twice, but I knew she did presses. I have only been there once since I’ve been natural. I asked Sonyia about a deep conditioning treatment, but she admitted that she wasn’t familiar with styling natural hair, which I appreciated a lot. She did recommend me to someone though, but I haven’t followed up on it.

I may try Michael’s Hair if I need a trim.

That reminds me of how much I need to detangle my hair, like, now…
