HaitianRoots’ bantu knot out

This was originally put up a few months back but taken down because of posting difficulties. Having worked the kinks out, I’m reposting it now…

BGLH: Where are you from?
HaitianRoots
: born in port au prince, haiti. bred in the burbs of chicago.

BGLH: How many years have you been natural?
HaitianRoots
: my last relaxer was in 1999. i chopped in may of 2000, so i’m almost at my 10 year anniversary!

BGLH: How did you come up with this style?
HaitianRoots
: i had actually checked out something similar at she.2petite and a couple of other fotki and natural sites and wanted to try it. i wanted to create an updo that was clean yet funky. i love curls and wanted to show them in a sophisticated style.

BGLH: How do you do it? What products do you use to do it?
HaitianRoots
: i two stranded my hair and then twisted them to the point where i could twist them into a knot. i twisted on semi-damp hair. put a scarf, went to sleep, woke up, took down the bantus and untwisted the twists and voila! after that, just tucked and pinned to get this look. the products i used were water, a lil’ shea butter and this homemade product i was trying out that an acquaintance made. it should be out in market within the next year or so. it holds curls very well without hardening.

BGLH: On what occasions do you rock this style?
HaitianRoots
: this was actually my Easter look but i would where something like this for a date night out with the hubby. it also is very professional in style so if i had a job to go to, i’d rock it to the office.

BGLH: How does your natural hair work for your life?
HaitianRoots
: this is an interesting question…not exactly sure how to respond. i mean, my hair is me. i can say it probably enhances my “style” since i believe that natural hair texture is so wonderfully unique. so on special occasions and/or outings i mos def think about how i’m going to style my hair and how it will effect the overall “look” that i’m desiring. never had an issue with it as a professional employee. now that i’m a grad student, twists, bantus, and yarn braids have been my friends because i don’t have to worry about styling. as a wife, all i can say is that the hubby loves my hair so he does weigh in on styling at times. he’s a huge fan of the all-simple puff; which ironically, i don’t rock that often.

i do have a love/hate relationship with my hair. so right now i am thinking about doing a major chop. but because i’m a planner, i can’t just go ahead and do it. i have to research a style, a stylist/beautician to consult. discussed with the husband and i said if i’m still feeling the way that i’m feeling around my 30th b-day than i will be starting a new journey with my hair once i turn 30.

This is SUPER cute, thanks for posting this style! I generally rock a ‘fro all the time and I’m craving a little variety without having to run to my flat iron, so I think this look will be perfect.

This hair style looks very nice! Her hair looks very healthy! I am sorry but I must admit that I have always envied Hatian women’s hair! One of my childhood best friends was from Haiti and she had the shiniest, thickest, healthiest hair! As was the case with most Hatian women that I had come into contact with in the past. Thank you for sharing this awesome style with us!

@HaitianRoots: LOVE IT! One question: how do you keep those head bands from slipping (especially that brown one)?

i am haitian as well. big up. @BGLH I have heard the same thing from other ppl about Haitian women and their hair. This co worker told me the same thing, she went to Haitian salons exclusively because she thought they had a hidden secret. She always asked me for it. and i don’t know of any secret — i just know how my mom always kept in plaits and moisturized, no heat and my first perm was in middle school and she would always leave that in the hands of licensed professionals. Anyways, i’ve heard it a lot. I have even come across threads with topics exclusively about Haitian women and their secret hair concotions. which is pretty funny.

haiti checking in! ;-) i’ve heard the same things about our hair on boards and from friends. i have noticed that our hair tends to be very thick and strong. funny enough, when i was relaxed, i only went to haitian hairdressers bc everybody had long hair in there! they couldn’t style but boy they could whip up a good hair treatment! lol!

re: haitianroots style, i loved the knots when they were 1st posted and still love them now! :-D

Hey All! Thanks for the love (again, lol). To be honest, this is the first I’ve heard about us Haitians having “hair secrets”, but it is nice to know!

@ AdriB, the headbands I believe are the Goodie no-slip (good grip) headbands, so they pretty much stay put. The only time I have had issues with them slipping and moving back is when I wear my hair (in twists) pulled back in a bun. I think it has more to do with the shape of my head though, lol.

Just FYI, I do have some updates that I am currently posting on fotki, so do check out.

    @Adrib

You can hold your headbands with hair clips like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD_RPvsP9qE
Just make sure it does not show too much. I already did it before.

‘m reppin Haiti 100%! Anyway, I’m glad I came across this, although I never heard of my Haitian hair (or anyone I know) being described like this. I love the hairstyle! I’ve had my hair natural for 11 years, dreadlocks for 10 years…I do not want to cut them off or ever perm my hair again, but struggling in that I want a new look..but love that my hair is so long because it sets it apart from the rest..any suggestions? please?
