My husband Rufus and I got married in July 2008 in Shaw Park Gardens in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We had a private ceremony by the waterfall in the botanic gardens with just the two of us and the officiant. We came back to the States and had a formal reception with family and friends in August 2008.
How was your big day??
A: I had the best of both worlds because I had two big days! On the day of the wedding, my husband and I woke and walked down to the gardens, where we had a short, simple ceremony. We were surrounded by lush greenery, the hypnotic rhythm of the waterfall and sounds of birds chirping. Our reception was a more formal, sophisticated affair, where we were celebrated our new life with the people we love the most.
How did you wear your hair?
A: For the wedding and the reception, I cornrowed my hair in the front and styled the back in two-strand twists. My husband loves natural hair and has always complimented me when I wear cornrows, so it was easy to decide. Plus, I wanted a style that was elegant, yet easy to maintain. On the day of the wedding, it took my 5 seconds to do my hair–it took that long to pin the flower in it!
How did your family/husband/guests receive your hair at the wedding?
A: My wonderful family and friends have always been supportive of my lifestyle choices, including how I wear my hair. I think the guests at our reception were more surprised by my husband–he had cut his nine-year old locks the morning of the event to signify our new life together.
