Deep Conditioning Products & Regimen

Today’s roll call is all about deep conditioning. It’s important to fortify the hair after days/weeks/months of manipulation, but how people go about it is very different.

So I have three questions;

    1. How often do you deep condition?
    2. What product(s) do you use?
    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?

I deep condition about once a week or every two weeks. It depends on how often I wash my hair. I used to swear by Elasta QPs DPR-11, but I cheated on it and accidentally fell in love with Palmer’s Coconut Deep Conditioner. LOL! It was cheap and my mom said she really liked it, so I figured I’d give it a try, but my hair LOVED it!! Now I don’t use any other deep conditioner.

When I deep-condition, I’m trying to really moisturize my hair and make it stronger to prevent breakage. So far, so good.

I use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner once a week to deep condition. My goal is simply to moisturize because my hair sucks up moisture like a sponge. i’m not really concerned with building protein right now; I’m trying to get my moisture game on lock because I’ve been guilty in the past of neglecting my hair in that department.
Especially now that i’m fully natural (bc’ed two weeks ago after transitioning for a year. YAY me! )I want to make sure that I’m really pampering my hair. :)

We try to deep condition once a week with Organics by Africa’s Best Olive Oil Deep Conditioning Treatment. We want to achieve strength moisture and length.

I try to deep condition once a week, or at least every time I shampoo. I don’t have a set DC product yet, but I have Mane N Tail, Shea Moisture, and a masque I bought from Butters and Bars. I DC to strengthen my hair.

  5. dee 25 August 2010 at 11:29 am Permalink

I have a TWA, and I DC twice per week (steam and then baggy overnight) with either Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose or Matrix Biolage Hydrating Balm. I do a protein treatment every other week with either Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Conditioner or a mixture of egg yolk, vanilla yogurt, coconut oil and honey.

    1. How often do you deep condition?
I try to deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner once a week and a protein once a month. However, this doesn’t always happen.

    2. What product(s) do you use?
Lately I’ve been testing Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle mixed with castor or coconut oil. So far so good!

    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
Deep condition to keep my hair moisturized, especially in winter. My hair needs all the moisture it can get!

    1. How often do you deep condition? The goal is once a week

    2. What product(s) do you use? Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask or Elasta QP DPR-11. I may or may not add olive oil and honey to either and I either sit under my hair steamer for 30 minutes or sleep overnight with a plastic cap.

    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? My ultimate goal is moisture.

I don’t DC often enough. I try to do it every time I shampoo my hair which is only once or twice a month. I know I need to step my game up. When I DC I use either Jessicurl Weekly DC or Lustrasilk Olive Oil and Egg DC. I try to alternate between protein and moisture since I have been known submit my hair to hydral fatigue.

I try to not go longer than 2 weeks without doing a deep condition. I usually use ORS Replen. Pack, but I soon will try Shea Moisture’s product because it’s more natural. My hair tends to require lots of moisturizing. However, after my BC in May it seemed like my hair really started needing the moisture. I do it in effort to maintain a state of health. I don’t want to go back to Hair ICU, lol.

I deep condition often, once a week or every 10 days or so….I like to pamper my hair :D

Generally I use a really creamy conditioner like aubrey organics gpb or honeysuckle rose, olive oil, and coconut oil, maybe honey.

when I want protein, I’ll use hair mayonnaise.

I try to DC once a week. I use LeKair Cholesterol Plus with a plastic cap and let it sit for 30-40 minutes. Wash it out with cool water. It makes my hair extremely soft. I want to try a new DC though.

  12. Naturally Me! 25 August 2010 at 11:56 am Permalink

I deep condition once a week with either ORS replenishing conditioner or olive oil & honey.
I accomplish softer more moisturized hair.

  13. Ruth 25 August 2010 at 12:04 pm Permalink

Once a week with the Placenta w/ Henna and Olive Oil pack or if my hair has had a really rough week I use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner. The goal is to get my hair well moisturized.

  14. Nina 25 August 2010 at 12:08 pm Permalink

    1. I deep condition every two weeks. I don’t use a hairdryer or a heating cap so I keep it in for about 2 hours. While waiting I do chores, watch t.v., exercise or run errands.

    2. The products I use are Dove Intense Damage Therapy (the best conditioner I’ve ever had. :)) and coat it with Salon Care Cholesterol. My hair turns out sooo unbelievably soft.

And Oh, I also make sure to rinse with cold water so that the moisture isn’t stripped.

    3. I DC for the moisture, I’ve noticed that it has changed the strength of my hair. I’ve tugged at hair strands that have shed to test this hypothesis, and there is a definite improvement, as they took more force to break than usual.

  15. freeyourheart 25 August 2010 at 12:08 pm Permalink

i usually DC twice a monthly.
i go to a stylist monthly,
    and get steamed,
then i usually DC overnight after i shampoo my hair.
i used to use giovanni’s deeper moisture & bag it,
but recently i’m using trader joe’s nourish spa conditioner
with coconut & tea tree oil,
& my hair has fallen in love.

i DC for added moisture and strength
& to alleviate my dry, itchy scalp issue.

I deep condition my hair over night with Ojon Revitalizing Hair Treatment every one to two weeks, this product is rather pricey, but i’ve had the jar for almost 2 years!! I Love it!!!!!
If I’m lazy I’ll DC with Queen Helene Cholesterol Conditioner,my mom used this on my hair even as a child!! oldie but goodie.

My hair stays thirsty so i DC for moisture as well as preventing breakage.

  17. Aisha 25 August 2010 at 12:12 pm Permalink

I deep condition every week. The main purpose is to give my hair moisture-I’ve found this is the best way. I use a variety of products. My favorites are usually a heavy cholesterol conditioner (such as the one by Hollywood Beaty) or the Organic Root Stimulator Replenish Pacs.

  18. Aisha 25 August 2010 at 12:14 pm Permalink

Wow, just read through the answers and it seems that ORS Replenishing conditioner is a hit!

  19. Stacey 25 August 2010 at 12:26 pm Permalink

I DC at least once a week. However I’ve been doing it every three days b/c I’m working out more and I DC everytime I co-wash.

I’ve recently started using Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Conditioner. LOVE IT! Most use Hello Hydration but TT is so slept on!

My ultimate goal is to aid in length retention through moisture (and protective styles).

    1) I DC every time I wash my hair (as a norm, once a week).

    2) I like to use either Jessicurl’s Too Shea moisturizing conditioner or Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner.

    3) My main goal when I DC is to increase/retain moisture.

  27. Naturally Converted 25 August 2010 at 2:20 pm Permalink

I DC once a week (I missed last week because I was traveling!). I use my own mixture of avocados, eggs, coconut, tea tree, peppermint, rosemary oil, extra virgin olive oil, and Honey! This has worked well so far with my hair, I’ve been natural, in a sense, for 6 years.. jus recently stopped straightening it..

  28. aJwitaFrO 25 August 2010 at 4:16 pm Permalink

I usually try and go for shampoo and DC once a week… i definitely think it’s an important part of a healthy natural hair care regimine. I’ve found that adding Olive Oil to my deep conditioners really helps to keep my hair soft. It’s one of the few oils that is actually able to penetrate our hair. :-)

  29. Toni 25 August 2010 at 4:22 pm Permalink

    1. How ofter do you deep condition?
I deep condition twice a week

    2. What products do you use?
Right now I am in between. I just finished using my Hair Mayo by Organic Root Stimulator but now I’m trying out a cheaper product because I am trying to save money. I’m learning cheaper is not always better. I always use Growth Oil by B&B when I deep condition, not for growth but because it is a great mix of wonderful oils!

    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
All of the above. I dyed my hair when I big chopped for personal reason. Because it is very drying, I have to deep condition. But I will continue this routine in between my protective styling.

  33. teachermrw 25 August 2010 at 6:13 pm Permalink

    2. What product(s) do you use? For moisture, Keracare Humetco. For protein, Dudley Hair Rebuilder.

I dc once a week, I use Shea Moisture over nite with a baggie, leaves my hair super soft and moistured.

  39. Adriii 25 August 2010 at 11:07 pm Permalink

I usually deep condition weekly. I combine conditioner (lately it’s Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner which I LOOOOOOVE!), coconut oil, and olive oil. Let is sit anywhere from a couple hours up to a couple days depending on how I feel. I don’t really understand the whole protein thing, so I just judge my hair’s health by touch. When I touch it, I want it to feel soft and not dry, from the roots until the ends.

  40. Britney D. 25 August 2010 at 11:17 pm Permalink

I deep condition once a week using afro detangler, jojoba oil, castor oil, and aloe vera juice. (A modified version of Kim Love’s leave-in conditioner recipe) I DC for all three reasons but mainly for moisture. :)

  41. MP 25 August 2010 at 11:34 pm Permalink

Truthfully, not often enough. I really should do it once a week, especially in the winter.
I’ve been good the past two weeks though and did a protein treatment last week, followed by a DC this week.

  42. MP 25 August 2010 at 11:40 pm Permalink

Oops, I deep condition for moisture with Blended Beauty Herbal Reconditioner. I’m currently using Aubrey Organics GPB for protein, but when the bottle is gone we’re done. The scent lingers and I find it unpleasant. I generally go for a deeper conditioner when my hair is feeling drier and less springy (elastic) than usual.

  43. Efe 26 August 2010 at 12:30 am Permalink

    1. I deep condition once a week.

    2. I mostly use a mixture of bananas, coconut milk, honey, EVOO and EVCO. If I’m in a pinch, I use a mixture of conditioner, honey, EVOO and EVCO.

    3. I deep condition for increased moisture retention.

  44. Chantel 26 August 2010 at 12:51 am Permalink

I rotate between a deep conditioner (Elasta QP DPR-11) and reconstructor (Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor). Most of the time I use a deep conditioner weekly and reconstructor when I feel I need it (hair might be shedding too much, or too much wear and tear).

    -All of the above

    1. Once a week. I’m determined to keep that up once school resumes.
    2. Keracare Humecto. I sacrificed and bought a salon-sized tub of it when I saw how much my hair loved it. It should last me for a while.
    3. Moisture. My hair is a hog for it.

  47. Valerie 26 August 2010 at 1:26 am Permalink

I deep condition once a week. I used Elasta QP religiously with olive oil and honey for moisture, my hair is VERY dry.

I recently ran out of Elasta QP and I now use Giovanni’s Deep Smooth as Silk. I use it for moisture, but I believe others use it for strength, my hair is protein sensitive but I found that this product works for me. I still feel like I get the moisture I need, but I get a little protein too.

    1. How often do you deep condition?
    Once every 1-2 weeks

    2. What product(s) do you use?
AOHSR, YTC, Lush’s Retread…if I have these on hand. However with at least some honey & coconut oil mixed in to any conditioner my hair is happy

    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?
I would have to say moisture, because if I give myself a protein treatment I make sure to follow that up with deep conditioning. My hair LOVES this combo.

About every 10 days or so. I will take Oyin’s Honey Hemp condish, add a touch of baking soda, and a little extra honey and olive oil, and let that joint sit up in there for at least an hour…comb thru and rinse!
