Deep Conditioning Products & Regimen

Today’s roll call is all about deep conditioning. It’s important to fortify the hair after days/weeks/months of manipulation, but how people go about it is very different.

So I have three questions;

    1. How often do you deep condition?
    2. What product(s) do you use?
    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein?

    DC once a week
Once every 3 weeks with a protein treatment then follow with DC

DC-AOHSR with some Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, EVOO
    Protein-Egg white and natural yogurt

    DC-gives me mega moisture
Protein-strengthens my hair and has given me a fantastic decrease in breakage

Happy hair and an even more happier me!

I deep Condition Once a Week.
Right Now I use the Carol’s Daughter deep conditioners and when I dont have that I use ORS or a plain conditioner with coconut oil, essential oils, and hair mayo

I deep condition for moisture. .. My hair is sooo dry when in a puff…only way I can retain moisture is if I wear it in two strand twists…

I try to deep condition at least weekly. I use Queen Helene’s Cholesterol mixed with ORS Hair Mayo, coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, castor oil, and shea butter. I put it on my hair with the heat cap that I bought and rinse it after 30 minutes.

WOW>>> you all deep condition so often.

I deep condition once a month!

    I use queen helene cholesterol.

I do it because it’s supposed to fortify my hair against breakage, the elements, and for just overall strength.

    Hair type: 4b, kinky/coily…think cotton ;)

I DC once/week with Aubrey’s Organice Honeysuckle Conditoner, I apply it to my dry hair, leave it on then wash and condition again. My DC purpose is for protein and moisture.

I know that this has nothing to do with deep conditioning but i need some serious help with my hair because it has almost been 4 months since I’ve been natural but the right side of my head where my edges are just won’t grow but it isn’t that bad but the left side is just fine but I see it and it bothers me can someone help me please?

    • rachel 9 October 2011 at 2:15 pm Permalink

you can use castor oil to strengthen your edges…i had the same problem when i BC in january

Never. There is a school of thought that says that deep conditioning is a myth. I think it’s true based on my personal experience. It is a means for companies to charge more for conditioners.

im almost a year bein natural and im dwindling down to my TOP 3 DC’s; i do it for moisture (protein once a month) and overall it just feels good. Miss Jessie’s rapid recovery, Carol’s D Tui smoothie, hairveda sitrinilla (up next to try is darcy’s and shea moisture)

@jules; try massaging in castor oil for the edges and dont put any stress on em like wearing it back in puffs n etc.

Once a week when wearing natural styles
Once every two when flat ironing.

I use Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner and i LOOOOOOOOVE it ever so much. I DC to keep the hair healthy, reduce frizz and to retain length…gotta keep those ends happy and moisturized. :-)

@ Jules also, try not to sleep mainly on your left. and at night make sure you edges aren’t exposed to the sheets…i know my bonnet tends to slip up while i sleep…

Since I’ve been natural I don’t think I’ve ever deep conditioned my hair. I wash and condition it every week and I haven’t had any major problems. Maybe some dryness after I use a lot of product but that’s about it. Would it benefit me to start?

  14. MsJJ 22 September 2010 at 9:22 am Permalink

I actually don’t. Trying to find a recipe and or products that I can do. My co-washes have had to been my main source of conditioning.

    So I have three questions;

    1. How often do you deep condition? –Weekly
    2. What product(s) do you use?– silicon mix or any protein DC
    3. What are you trying to accomplish with your deep condition; increased strength? moisture? protein? Soft yet strong hair (does that make sense?) I alternate between moisture and protein on a week by week baises.

I just started deep conditioning more often – weekly to every two weeks depending on what’s going on in my life — it’s made a big difference in shininess and strength. henna and deep conditioner combo.

Since I live in NY it’s cold and it strips moisture. I condition every week when I wash. And just deep deep condition once a month. I use my homemade conditioner which the base is whipped Shea Butter & Coconut Oil I mix in honey and other oils, then put a conditioner on top. It’s been working for me. I also henna once every 3 months.

  18. Imani 16 January 2011 at 12:41 am Permalink

    I deep condition once/week.
I’ve been experimenting with different DCs, right now I use Cholesterol Aloe Vera, and just this week I mixed it with Honey. I have used egg, and olive oil (for protein), honey and olive oil (heavenly!), and banana, olive oil, and honey (a bit too much, and the bananas left seeds in my hair).
I do it because I need it. I am always complimented on how soft my hair is, and if I don’t DC then it wouldn’t be this soft!

I condition every other day. Is that bad? My hair just feels funny and stiff if i go longer. I try to increase moisture and Im using Organics shea butter condititioner

Are you DCing on wet or dry hair? Before or after shampooing? I’ve seen some people do it different ways, so I’m just wondering.

  21. Tay 11 June 2011 at 7:55 am Permalink

I have mixed hair. I find if i use deep conditioners that are too heavy like hair mayo and stuff my hair gets really heavy and oily instead of curly and soft. I have been straightening my hair for years and every summer i go natural just to re-cooperate. I deep condition every week with Aussie’s 3 minute miracle deeeep conditioner after i condition and shampoo my hair (make sure you stimulate your scalp by massaging it) with *sulfate free* Organix Morrocan oil Conditioner and Acia Berry Shampoo. My hair smells great and feels really soft! I SOFTLY pat it dry, never rub vigorously with a towel, and run my fingers through it with coconut oil, since its water based. Then i apply Hawaiian Silky to define my curls, and top it off with morrocan argon oil to lock in moisture and keep my curls shiny and soft all day. I make sure i get all these products through root to tip and i never ever comb through my hair with anything but my fingers. To reduce breakage from wet roots i diffuse my hair until its dry at the root and all over, also my hair doesn’t get brittle frizzy or damaged because Hawaiian Silky has heat protector in it. I take a multi vitamin daily specifically made for hair, nails, and skin as well- which is high in biotin, silicon/keratin, vitamins, and fish oil to support my hair growth and add protein.

I deep condition once a month but alternate between protein (homemade), moisture (water, aloe vera, honey and essential oils) and hot oil (olive oil or coconut oil) so I am doing each 4 times year.

I never used to deep condition, but since I have started doing it (as needed, which usually translates to once every week or 2), my hair is much more moisturized and elastic. I was always too lazy to do it, but I make time on the weekends now or start the process as soon as I get home from work.

    I vary my DC method:
Olive Oil or Coconut Oil treatment
    Janelle’s Beauty Diva Smooth
    Honey + Olive/Coconut Oil
    Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque

Whichever I choose, it stays on either overnight or for 1-2 hours with a plastic cap AND bonnet. If it is a weekday, I do a baby DC by putting using a moisturizing product (usually my regular Shea Moisture conditioner -not the masque) and putting on a plastic cap AND bonnet for 10-20 minutes then rinsing (always with COLD water). That holds me over until the weekend when I can give my hair more time and attention.

    LOL, I just wrote a thesis…

    1x weekly
    Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Deep Conditioner
    Strenght and Moisture

I’ve been doing this since my BC in 7/11 and it has done wonders for my hair…strenght wise, moisture as well as growth.
