Video of the day: Ford Fiesta commercial cast at Howard University features beaucoup naturals!

The commercial was cast at Howard University, so the actors and actresses are Howard students. It’s great to see so many gorgeous naturals at a historically black university. For those of you who attend HBCUs, what is the natural hair scene like?

Cool commercial! The music, models, and overall styling definitely equates Ford with a young/hip buyer.

i recently transferred to a small hbcu in historical selma, al from the melting pot of florida international univ. in miami, fl and needless to say i am the only student with natural hair on campus (granted, there are MANY that have locs even though it is for the sake of the current fad, yet i alone rock my natural curls). There are three professors who are natural as well, however they aren’t the best examples of all the possibilities our hair can offer.

needless to say, the response has been pleasantly overwhelming. i’ve met one who’s told me that she is currently transitioning, numerous have inquired about my hair routine and even mumbled halfheartedly that they think they shall go natural as well, and i even overheard one female say to her male companion “i hope she don’t ever get a perm cause her hair is too pretty”.

naturally, there are the ever present young girls who gawk, stare and state catty remarks but i feel that’s a whole different issue in the black community that has nothing to do with my hair and more so to do with their self esteem.

    HU! YOU KNOW!!
I’m currently a student at Howard and the natural hair scene has really took off from what I’ve seen so far. There are so many TWA’s and shaved heads, it’s amazing. I feel like it’ll only get better from here because I know of a few ladies who are currently transitioning.

I go to Spelman College (number 1) and I honestly didn’t realize I didn’t have to have a relaxer until I came there. We are educated to become conscious of what it means to be part of the African diaspora and the way it has impacted the way black people view themselves and others. Tons of people were just like me and are transitioning now. A lot of us use weaves to get past the TWA stage, but a lot of people also big chop. Many people are surprise naturals and often wear their hair straight and just don’t want to relax. I think there is only one professor in the English department who still has a relaxer. Very natural friendly!

HU! I graduated from Howard in ’06 and i recognize one of those faces. The natural hair scene was not as big as it is now when i was in school. But alot of my classmates are now natural or in the process of becoming (such as myself.) Love that Ford did this commercical though.

Morgan State, Morgan State!! You know! The natural hair scene at MSU is abundant and diverse. From women transitioning, ‘fros, locs, pressed and wash-n-gos, it’s just a pleasure to see more natural hair on the yard. Yessssss, Lady Bears!

    HU!! YOUUU KNOWW!!

i currently attend Howard, and the natural scene is buzzing. on some part, its because of a phase. i don’t want to start that with “unfortunately” because as these individuals move through that phase, they grow to love their natural hair and the way it looks feels, meshes with, and brings out their inner personality. i know that i gained confidence once i went natural (before freshman year) and my style changed and i love everything about me.

    go bison! =)

I was JUST saying today how I LOVE that commercial for all the natural hair!! I attended a HBCU (Oakwood University) in Huntsville, Alabama and the natural scene is Prevalent. A lot of women have natural hair from flat-ironed to TWA to fierce twist-outs ans everything in between. I can attend to many women who came to Oakwood *points to self* and shortly after starting began their natural hair journey! :) I LOVE this site!! Keep up the good work!

FAMU FAMU alright alright alright! Lol I currently attend FAMU. During my freshman year when I went natural, there was only a handful of us and we stood out against all the weaves and lacefront hair hats across campus. Now I’m currently in my junior year and upon return the natural hair scene was one of the first things I noticed. Before I’d be the only loose natural in my class but now there’s 10 to 11 of us. Hopefully this isn’t just a “fad” and women will realize that getting relaxers isn’t the only option.

I attend Morgan State University and every semester I see more and more natural hair ladies. I love that HBCU’s have such a beautiful and diverse student– and even faculty– population. Theres weaves, braids, afro’s, locs– everything! There are quite a few girls in my classes that have a variation of natural styles. Im so glad to see how many beautiful black ladies have decided to embrace their own uniqueness and stand out. We are all beautiful, no matter the hair style. :)
