Maintaining my regimen once the crush of school occurs. Right now, it’s all good but I’ll be figuring out ways to squeeze in Cleansing/Deep Condition time – no doubt about that.

Well just recently (1 week ago) I couldn’t figure out why my wash and goes were dry and straw-like after a few hours. Prior to that, wash and goes did it for my “smedium” TWA. I was really uncomfortable about my natural hair for the first time this week (sad face). Background….. BC in Nov 20009 and then braids for 8 months, so my hair regimen was SIMPLE! I have been wearing my tresses out for 6 weeks now and all of a sudden my wash and goes aren’t doing it for me. I seriously could have stared in a Dr. Miracle Commercial…lol. So… I revamped things, Aussie Moist Conditioner, great detangling tools, my Shea-Coco mixture, Shea Moisture Curling product and Eco-Styler Gel olive oil (the later 3 are used for my 2 strand twist out. I also started using organic castor oil, coconut oil, tea tree EO, peppermint EO, jojoba oil, and EVOO to seal and moisturize in the morning. BABY….this regimen has my hair soft, bouncy, and full of life! I LOVE MY HAIR!! It has made a full transformation by changing a few simple steps. I always heard of ladies saying, “you have to listen to your hair” but really didn’t get it until now. You really have to listen to your hair because it tells you what it needs. Good Luck ladies. Stay positive and know you’re beautiful!

Oh my goodness, I feel that my hair has not grown for the past 6 months or so. It obviously has a little, but I feel like I should have so much more length by now and my hair has been severely suffering from split ends and some breakage. It needs to stop!!

I have two issues right now. 1) Serious hair loss due to having lupus. There’s not much I can do about it so I’m currently wearing a hat everyday and trying to ignore my hair altogether.

    2) Even though I’ve been natural my whole life, I’m having a difficult time accepting that my hair is naturally thin (low density ie not that many strands) and it will NEVER be big and fluffy like many other naturals.

Honestly, these two issues combined have me wanting to keep my hair covered for the rest of my life and give up on this whole hair thing.

I’m a new natural of about 4 months. I have problems with whether my hair is shedding or breaking. When I co-wash I feel like a good amount of hair is coming out. I freak out in the shower when I see those “black circles” at the bottom of my shower. I thought I turned natural so the breakage would come to an end. I’m completely lost on my journey. ALSO, I’m leaving for a 3 month trip to Kenya in less than a week. I keep second guessing what to bring.
    HELP!!

  7. That old thing back 2 September 2010 at 12:05 am Permalink

I’m currently fighting the addiction of getting my hair straightened in a Dominican salon (twice in 2 weeks, ugh!). My hair has been texturized and relaxed, and it also has about 4 months of new growth. As a result, I have a bird’s nest of 10 different textures. It’s not very long (the back is nape length and the sides are chin length) so any curly style just makes it WORSE. Frustrating!

On another note: I’m afraid, I’m afraid, I’M AFRAID…that I won’t love my natural hair once it’s all grown out. It’s got me contemplating a happy medium between relaxed and natural. Does such a thing exist? I think not. Even with a texturizer I eventually end up with straight hair.

I just want to get this first year of growing out the poison over with :(

    • Ballerina Girl 13 March 2011 at 11:19 am Permalink

Try the Global Keratin- brazilian keratin blow-dry…it’s amazing!
My hair is SL natural and I’m growing relaxer out of the crown.
It’s helps to blend the 2 textures together. It basically makes your hair stay straight for longer with minimal frizzing. It literally I’ve had it for 4 months and my hair has grown 3 inches.
It’s stronger and silkier than ever. The best thing is it’s not permanent. It washes out after about 8 weeks and cos it shrinks up when it’s wet you can wear it Afro if you like or with a braid out/twist out. But then when you when you want to wear it straight it takes like half the time.
I’m not sure if I’ll get booed off this blog for saying the above but it really helped me :-)
      That is all xx

I have several issues. Dryness. Mainly trying to figure out a regime. Dealing with different curl patterns and frizziness. I stop relaxing in May 2010, BC in July and have been dealing with dryness ever since. Initially my hair would turn super dry after hours of washing. Tried several conditioners but hello hydration seems to work for the dryness. Cross your fingers. I have mostly wavy curly hair in the front the sides and nape are tighter coils. Starting to get some knotting in some curls.

Right now i am thinking about giving up! I’ve been natural for 7 months. My hair has grown so wonderful. I just dont know what to do. I have hair long enough to do all kind of styles.

  10. Chocolate 2 September 2010 at 12:52 am Permalink

I have a few. One is my hair is actually growing and now i dont know what to do with it. I pull it back alot, but the back is so thick now, its really hard to do! Im a “conservative natural” i guess, but i really wana step out of my shell. I see lots of beautiful women on this site with their hair out, but when i let my hair out it just looks str8 and stingy! The funny thing is my hair doesnt have much curl definition, the front and middle looks almost str8 and the back is nice and chunky (but thats only the back)….and get this, i’ve never had a perm in all my life. Maybe i shud try updos or something, i think pulling my hair back so often is gonna kill my poor hairline!

Another problem is that my sides are short. Like the middle grows twice as fast as the side. I mean i see a little growth at the side. The side is like 5inches while the middle is like 9inches or so… What a difference! Anyone else experience something similar to this??

  11. Jana 2 September 2010 at 1:28 am Permalink

It wont hold a twist out more than two days. (regardless to whether i go to a shop or not). Dryness, knots and frizziness as well.

  12. ify 2 September 2010 at 1:58 am Permalink

my hair…hmm…this space is not enough. it’s dry, brittle, watever i do, it stays dry, brittle, tangly(especially this one the sides and somwhere in the back), everything. the only reason i still won’t get a relaxer is dat i don’t like relaxers, i’ve cut my hair twice this yr(takin down like 3 inches each time from my already short hair) i coloured it black tho but that’s not the only reason it’s dry. as a student, i don’t do a lot of products bt for now i use the HH shampoo(not frequently), conditioner and mask. i also use sheabutter and castor oil, olive oil sometimes. don’t get me started on my hairline…my hair isn’t even long enough for ponytails(so i don’t do them) and i don’t do braids nd stuff. in all, it’s makin me really sad.

  13. ify 2 September 2010 at 2:09 am Permalink

ok i think we are expectd to also profer solutns to other ppl’s problems.

@ Leslie C, from wat i learnd so dar, breakage goes from the tips( therefore r usually not that long) while shedding comes from the roots( u can see d white bulb at d roots) for a 3 month trip, depending on the level of activity(like if u’ll have a lot of time), u cud take all ur basic hair products(deep conditioners, leave-ins, shampoo, etc) as 3 months is a long time(enuf to get ur hair messd up too). u could also opt to braid your hair for some of the time.

all other issues r somewhat similar to mine so i can’t really say much.

I chopped it all off on 12/31/09. I am trying to give myself a year of being natural before I decide if this is or is not for me. I love it in the sense that I can get up and go and the reaction I get from others who wish they could be natural. I recently pressed it for the first time in 7 months just so I can trim it and it is so long. The press was so awesome because I could finally see how long and healthy it has grown. I guess now my challenges are styling issues. I get bored from going from twist to fro and back again. I am tempted to perm (stay away from the creamy crack I know) or even press it occasionally. What can I do, help!

hmmm I can honestly say at this point in my hair journey that I don’t have any particular frustrations with my hair per se. Although, I am a little frustrated with myself when I get really lazy with my hair or when I don’t bother trying new styles. I just really want to learn how to cornrow properly but it takes practice if you’re not naturally good at it.

Anyways, I think that properly detangled and well moisturized (sealed) hair can solve a lot of the problems that people are having.

    good luck all ;-)

I just cut off some of my heat damaged hair!!! I cut the front right side and some of the back right by the edge…I decided to cut the front because I have a twa and in another 3 months it will be another inch and a half or two and back healthy…I will cut the middle sections later so no one will notice the shortness that much…

Almost three years into my journey, and I love my hair. But my issue is stretched styles. I just can’t figure out how to get my hair to look good in a twistout, braidout, rollerset, etc…Maybe becuase my hait takes forever to dry, or I want it to look like everyone else’s results,I’m not patient enough…hell I don’ know. I got a helmet dryer thinking that would solve my problems, but so far no dice :-(

I have been natural for about 3 weeks now. I haven’t had many challenges, but just htis week, I have notices that a few spots of my hair are frizzy. I have been using Garnier Leave In Conditioner and sealing with Coconut Oil, (which my husband has been putting in my toddlers hair to brush :)and then the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancer. I think I may need to twist the parts of my hair the are frizzy to see if that will make a difference. I am trying to do a deep condition with heat a little heat from a hand dryer, which I tried for the first time on Sunday. I haven’t seen much results, but I will try it again sitting under a dryer to find better results.

    Still loving my natural hair!!!

General styling frustration. It would be lovely to have a natural hair salon where you can go and get ‘did up’ (LOL) just like you do with permed hair, so you can leave feeling like alllllahdat. It’s difficult finding a signature style (e.g. for work or school) that doesn’t take forever to accomplish.

    I have the knowledge to attain healthy, thick, beautiful hair. I’ve grown my mothter-n-law, sister, and my daughters hair to mid back length, however my hair hasn’t reached its full potential because I’m too tired to deal with it, because i spend so much time taking care of everyone else’s hair!!!!! I have no excuse for my laziness. So i guess my hair problems are in existence because of my lack of telling myself “GET UP AND DO YOUR HAIR YOU LAZY BUM!!!!”{

    @ Leslie C

Pack glycerin for sure! It’s a humectant, which means that it will draw moisture from the air into your hair. Mix it with water (the right mix varies depending on how your hair reacts to it but for me I use 1 part glycerin to 2 parts water). I’m assuming Kenya will be hot so take advantage of the weather and spray this in your hair every morning before you go out (don’t forget to seal the ends with your favourite oil). Moisturizing your hair will help in preventing breakage. Have a safe trip!

Hi Ladies…my frustrations is that my hair is growing out and I have limited style options..well its really just me who cant style (braids, twists, etc) so this is why I opt for molding my hair into the shape I like..and I keep my hair shaped so that its always in a style when i wear it out..(ex. short at the back and sides longer at the top..tapered).

I recently added a few highlights at the top because I was getting bored..which i love

@ the ladies with the dryness! oh no! what i found ,is what AJwitafro said, keeping the hair properly detangled and moisturized it very very beneficial..My hair loves TWIST! i twist it EVERY night and boy oh boy does is save my hair! its always really bouncy too..

I also have found that Shea Moisture products work well for my thick kinks (for reference check out Amanda in the Now and Then sept giveaway) but find what works for you hair and listen to what its saying..thats what helped me :o)

    happy growing ladies!

My main issue with my hair is time. I’m a counselor at a college and I’m also a dance instructor for an HBCU danceline (think drumline dancers) and we practice alot. Needless to say my usual routine of keeping conditioner in my hair all day on saturday has been nixed as well as my daily twist outs. I have not time to twist, not time to condition, ugggh!

  25. Ivy 2 September 2010 at 11:00 am Permalink

Maybe these suggestions will help some:
GROWTH – try deep moisturizing conditioning treatment. Alot of people like Queen Helene Cholerstol. I like the Shea Moisture line (get it at Target). Do these weekly and then TWIST or BRAID it up. If you keep it in twists/braids, you WILL notice growth. But you have to condition/cleanse it.

DRYNESS – try weekly deep moisturizing treatments, spritzing hair nightly with distilled water/leave-in conditioner mix, and sealing with coconut oil

STYLING – YOUTUBE!! search youtube for natural hair styles. There are a plethora of options available there. But jsut know, if your hair is shorter than about 5 inches curly, you may have to do twa wash-n-gos dressed up with flowers/headband/hair clips/etc.

FRIZZY HAIR – try Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition or Sleek and Shine line. This is pretty good for combatting frizziness. Also, do twist-outs or braid-outs, which will help you achieve a more even curl pattern.

SPLITS N TANGLES- Somehow you are being harsh with your hair. Don’t comb it unless it is soaking sopping wet and loaded with conditioner. And only comb starting at the ends GENTLY and workign your way up the hair shaft. Don’t brush a million strokes and only use a natural bristle brush (like boar hair). Try to work out tangles with your fingers and oil first, then use a comb. Always use a conditioner after washing and avoid shampoo that has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can dry out your hair. Co-wash more often than you shampoo wash. Also, try steam treatments using a hair steamer.

NAIL DOWN A REGIME – so you know what works for you and what doesn’t. You hair will appreciate consistency.

Patience, Research, and Love for your hair is the Key, Ladies. Treat it like fine wool and it will thrive and grow for you!

    Dryness and growth

  27. Sheka 2 September 2010 at 11:38 am Permalink

DRYNESS/KNOTS – I was experiencing dryness and Knots and then I decided to start doing what I term “Steam Baggies”. I normally do this with Twist, but it can be doing on a TWA or Puff. Before showering I spritz my hair with water and then scoop up a little of my favorite oils mixed together and gentle rub them over my hair – making sure to catch the ends. I then put a shower cap on and jump into the shower making sure that the water is warm enough to produce steam. However, instead of removing the shower cap after showering, I dry off the shower cap while it is on my head and then cover with my silk bonnet and go to sleep. In the morning I notice that my hais has shine, looks healthy, and retains moisture better.

  28. Yonnie 2 September 2010 at 11:39 am Permalink

My challenge is finding flattering, relatively low maintenance protective styles for medium length (about 7 inch strands when stretched) 4b super kinky hair ASIDE from two strand twists. Two strand twists take too long to put in (I like a lot of them so I don’t look scalpy) which means that after 7 days I don’t want to take them out just to wash and condition my hair and put them back in.

  29. Reseerese 2 September 2010 at 11:48 am Permalink

I’ve always had a problem with growth in the back of my head, a little above my nape area. My stepmother told me it’s because my nerves are back there but I don’t know.

I thought this would change When I decided to go natural. I used micros to transition and it grew the back a lot until I had a really tight weave put in that I had to cut out & it hasn’t been the same since…and I’m sure putting micros, sew ins & quick weaves on top of damaged hair hasn’t helped so I stopped all of that and BC’d for the 3rd time 7/30/10. I haven’t and don’t plan on using weaves, braids or any tension style in my regimen anytime soon.

I try to give that area extra love and conditioning but the back is still thin and slow to grow. The rest of my hair is very thick and grows like a weed! How do I fix this?

I have a thick head of arm pit length 3C-4A hair and my problems are…

    1. Maintaining moisture in my hair, especially since fall and winter weather will be here soon. However, I have found that using a deep conditioner, moisturizing with a good rise out conditioner, using a good leave-in-conditioner, then sealing with a mix of oils and butters (like Jane Carters Nourish and Shine or my mix of Shea butter and oils) has helped quite a bit. Again I hope this also works well in the winter months.

    2. Finding a cute and wearable hair style for school that is not my usual gelled up bun with a headband. I’m dying to try a style like twist outs or braid outs while being able to keep them looking decent the next day. Every time I’ve attempted it comes out looking wrong. Sometimes I wear medium-small two strand twists that have been done for me by a stylist, but by the end of the weak my scalp itches like crazy. I would love to be able to maintain my twists for up to 2 weeks.

    3. Finding a way to keep my scalp clean without causing product buildup, which then leads to an itchy scalp. Again the winter months are brutal on my skin and hair. I’ve tried oiling my scalp lightly with Jojoba oil, not applying product to my scalp at all and making sure to shampoo only my scalp. This has helped, but again, I hope this holds up in the winter months.

  32. Ruth 2 September 2010 at 12:51 pm Permalink

I had my hair in twist and still got knots! How??? I’ve never had a problem with knots before but the past two weeks have been torturous!

  33. Osakhomen 2 September 2010 at 1:23 pm Permalink

My only problem is my horrible split ends. I need to cut them off, but I don’t want to loose the length… also I plan on putting in sisterlocks as soon as a get the money, so I want to enjoy my length and hair loose even though the split ends are bad.

  34. Rosie 2 September 2010 at 2:19 pm Permalink

Wow I thought I was the only one with issues lol

Moptop Maven just posted a wonderful article about combating dry hair:
    http://moptopmaven.blogspot.com/2010/09/all-about-hair-dry-hair-checklist.html

Trouble detangling – just like Ivy said, you should only be combing your hair when its soaking wet WITH conditioner!

Giving up – Ladies oh boy do i know the struggles. Although your at a lost or a wits end please don’t give up. Don’t relax/skilner/texturize it!! you will regret it. Once you finally find the product/regmine/style for you, you will have to start all the way back from scratch with the big chop or transitioning.

Thinning edges – its the braids, stop doing it. No braids, then its the ponytail

Split ends – cut it, its the only way. Split ends only grow and damage more hair.

    Love this blog :-)

  35. Maji 2 September 2010 at 2:28 pm Permalink

Well my hair is growing really fast, which is awesome!

But right now my biggest problem is dryness. My biggest fear is becoming product dependent— meaning I don’t want to have to depend on the SAME product everyday when it comes to custards and oils. I need to learn how to switch it up just in case I don’t have access to *that* product. I use Kinky Curly custard and though it is awesome, I don’t want to put in my hair everyday to make it feel hyrdated, neither do I want to be dependent on the hair style it gives me too.

I am trying to get a hold of some Shea butter. I haven’t bought any from Whole Foods because I know I can get so much more around town for the price that they charge, if not less… it’s just a matter of taking my behind to the place I can get it. hehe

Also I am not too sure how to tell the difference between shedding and hair breaking… I think my hair is just shedding and perhaps I’m noticing slightly more because my hair has gotten thicker, longer, etc in the pass several months? (i only notice loss of hair in the shower, and I don’t comb my hair)

  36. aiych 2 September 2010 at 2:54 pm Permalink

For anyone having shedding or breakage problems, please read:

try a henna gloss treatment. You can find a great recipe for it on moptopmaven.blogspot.com, she has great tips.

seriously though, henna is no joke, it is the business and it is cheap (like 3 bucks for a package). I doubted it would work for me since I’ve tried protein conditioners and even the aphogee thing (twice!) but I’m so glad I finally just did it. There’s a reason why people talk about it so much and it’s because it really packs a lot of bang for your buck. I used Jamila henna, i got it from a local Indian grocer, but on the blog I listed she gives a list of several brands that are trustworthy.

I have thick hair that reached b/t my shoulder blades when straightened after only 2 years and I have been using ayurvedics and henna for the past couple months. It has really helped. The henna has gotten my hair growth back on track, I lost so much due to shedding after my blowout that I was worried I would start losing length.

    Henna for the win!

Oh and for a great detangling leave in try Yes to Cucumbers, it’s part of the Yes to Carrots line but it’s for color treated hair. The leave in has like 99.7 (99.9?) % natural ingredients has good slip so the hair is much easier to detangle. I use Cantu leave in as well but it’s not as great for slip. It’s worth a try is you have detangling issues and if you like organic stuff…

So many responses to this thread that I feel like we could use a weekly hair clinic on here. Once a week, a trusted stylist or guru could take over and answer our BGLH approved, hair related questions. She/he could answer a handful each time. It’d be great to do this weekly so readers get their problems answered. It’s great to read this blog and participate in debate but it would be good for readers to be rewarded with advice rather than just looking at other people’s regimens. The info here is good but unreadable as there’s no capacity for bold/colour/other fonts.

I have super kinky (major shrinkage) 4B hair. The best thing that ever happened to my hair is VEGETABLE GLYCERIN. Any ladies struggling with dryness, please try it. I mix it with water in a small spray bottle about one-third veggie glycerin and two-thirds water. Then I take a section, spray it, especially the ends, and braid it to stretch it out. When I take the braids out in the AM, my hair is super soft and moisturized.

I bought a 4 oz. bottle from whole foods, but next time I will buy a bigger size off of Amazon.com. I think they have 1 gallon for $33. Yes, a gallon. I love it that much.

  41. Olivia 2 September 2010 at 6:06 pm Permalink

Is it unrealistic to think I can wash-n-go my superkinky, superstrong, hard to break 4B hair? I love love love my natural curl pattern, but I keep getting KNOTS on the ends of my hair and knots that catch up with the middle of other hairs. I can’t comb or untangle these knots so I have to cut them out, which hurts my heart.

I’ve been natural all my life, but I’ve only worn a wash and go for about a year now. Before, I always combed then braided or twisted my hair while it was wet to stretch it. My hair was super long and healthy and knot-free. Only thing is I grew bored of the straighter, less unique texture.

I want my coils but I don’t want knots. Any suggestions, or is it impossible?

I recently bog chopped. This is the first time I’ve had hair this short and I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it. Wash and go’s are about to be out, as wearing wet hair in any sort of breeze gives me a raging headache. What to do? Wear hats until it grows?

    My current challenge…

Today I accidentally lit the front of my hair on fire with a bunsen burner :(

At first I wasn’t that bothered. My dignity seemed to have taken the most damage. But when I got home and started snipping off the cripety crackety parts…well the front of my hair is going to need a while to recover.

Does anyone know what I should do? So far I’ve deep conditioned with warm olive and coconut oil, shea butter and a bit of organix conditioner. and I’m about to detangle and cowash. sigh. seriously throughout high school and college i’ve had my hair in all sorts of crazy styles around a bunsen burner. i never thought i’d see the day when it would get the best of me.

Dryness, that is my problem. My regime or lack thereof has finally caught up with me. I wash, deep condition, leave-in and seal and still suffer from dryness the next day. Like, my ends feel like hay. Spraying with water everyday and sealing with oil helps but I’m really worried about what will happen in the winter.

I live in Kenya, you can get all of the things you need (glycerin, rose water, castor oil, olive oil etc) in little bottle at ANY grocery store (and they are everywhere!). what you might want to bring is a deep conditioner if you have a preference and shea butter, which is hard to find and very very expensive. Also you probably won’t find someone who can do you hair, but if you do, let me know!

My last relaxer was in November, no real BC, just slow and steady, not to mention home done. I live in Kenya and can get a lot of the products suggested easily. But there is no one who can do my hair if I don’t want braids, this includes cuts. Believe you me I have asked, stopped women on the street, you name it. I usually get a what did you do to your hair or a recommendation for a relaxer. Any suggestions on styles? Easy styles for the untalented? I do a wash and go now but it is cold in Nairobi and my hair takes half the day to airdry.

Also, what exactly are you suppose to do with shea butter? isn’t it thick on your hair?

My issue is getting use to seeing myself natural. I did my big chop 9/24/10 and that was cool cause i was growing it out for about a year so i have some kind of length but I am so use to seeing me with a long straight or curly weave or even my kinki twist(which i kept long). Saturday I had a self breakdown. i didnt feel sexy enough and i hated it. I guess i just have to rediscover who i am and redefine what is SEXY! I did this for me!I want to be a “Black Girl W/ Long Hair” and I will its all in time! Im just not use to it yet. With time I will see and be healed!! MUAH!!
