Ebony // Natural Hair Style Icon

Yesterday Ebony submitted a ‘question of the day’ for consideration. She also submitted her updated regimen (she was originally featured in December 2009). Check it out.

I’ve always been kind of unpredictable about my regimen, so I guess you can say I don’t really have a steady one. What I keep in the forefront of my mind is just keeping my hair in the best health and retaining the length. I’ve found that the key to that, for me, is moisture, moisture, moisture!!!! I use the most moisturizing products for my hair and I try to stay hydrated on the inside as well. I only shampoo every one to two weeks (depending on how I feel), but in between time I either co-wash or just rinse my hair.

Lately I’ve tried One ‘N Only Argan oil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner (I LOVE), Jane Carter Solution Products (I likey), and Miss Jessie’s Super Slip Shampoo and Creme De La Creme Conditioner (I don’t really likey). I still love Giovanni products, and the latest addition to my Giovanni “family” is the Smooth as Silk Xtreme Protein Hair Infusion. It says it’s for dry damaged hair, but those kinds of products usually offer tons of moisture (in my opinion). After about 6-8 weeks I clarify with 100% Black Soap…works wonders for my hair!!! Going-Natural.com has a shampoo that’s AWESOME. It’s called Herbal Shampoo Almond. I believe it’s has low sulfates if any. Their No More Knots Detangler and Curly Twist Out Hair Milk is great too.

Something that I’ve been doing within the last couple of years or so…is only use water based products when my hair is sopping wet, and oil/butter based products after my hair has dried. I used to be happy with my hair 80 -90% of the time. Now I can say that I always get the results I want with my hair—-it’s only taken 6 years, but it’s cool. LOL! The biggest change I’ve noticed in my hair is indeed the moisture factor. It used to be soft for just a couple of days after styling. Now it’s always soft! It’s funny to look back at my hair blunders/mistakes, but I’m grateful for them. I can pass things I’ve learned to other naturals who are trying to find their way or aspiring ones.

Today you can’t pay me to put my head under any kind of water without twists in my hair first. Whether, I’m shampooing, co-washing, or just rinsing it MUST be twisted—especially now that my hair is almost waist length (<—that’s crazy)! Neither do I shampoo my hair all the time like a mad woman anymore! Oh—and I broke up with my denman brush. I’ve fallen in love with the tangle teezer!!!!! I thought it was a joke when I first saw it, but it works like nothing I’ve ever used. Overall I’d have to say time and experience has definitely been good to me. Although my hair is much longer, it’s much easier to care for my hair!

You can keep up with me at www.manelycurls.blogspot.com :-)

        • I’d say so…the denman was Okay for me. The Tangle Teezer just works better for me. Take a look at some YouTube tutorials real quick.

          • This whole hair typing thing seems to be VERY subjective. From her first two pix I would have guessed she was a 3-C. The last pic looks more 4-A to me.

            LOl and at one point i thought I had 4-b, if that’s 4-A then i’m 4-Z!

            Gorgeous hair btw.

          • LOL! Thanks Andrea…I don’t really go by hair typing, but if someone asks I’ll generalize it. You’re right though. It actually IS 3c around the back and on the sides. It’s 4a in the top and since that’s what everyone sees, that’s just what I say when asked. I don’t even like that whole system to be honest. :-)

  2. Lovely hair! It gives me heart that it’s taken her 6 years to perfect her regimen. My hair craves moisture too and i’m still working things out.

I’d like to know what she found she was doing wrong that led to her having dry hair after one or two days of moisturising? Is that issue of dryness now resolved because she adds water based moisturisers on wet hair and oil/butter on dry hair? Most people talk about oils and butters working on damp hair only and using water based moisturisers on dry hair.

    • Hey Dear! My issue with dryness came from shampooing way too much. Oil and water don’t mix. That’s why I only use the products the way I do. Using water based product on a finished style can cause shrinkage (don’t want thaaaaaaaaat!) LOL! I hope you find what you need :-)

      • Hey, I completly agree… I just can’t spray water mix in my hair, out of my wash day. That’s dry my hair :( but I don’t have any other solution two moisturize my favorite style two strand twist. And I have an other question do u wash ur twist?

  4. It was exciting to see this post because Ebony actually was one of my first hair inspirations. I used to stalk her fotki about 5 years ago and I thought her hair was beautiful and it gave me the courage to do it myself. She just gave great advice, I just shampooed my shoulder length hair today without twisting it first (I know better) and I’m dealing with tangles galore.

And earlier I was regretting the fact that I didn’t pick up a Tangle Teezer from Sallys a few days ago, I’m convinced that I need it in my life. I will also try to find that Giovanni Protein treatment because I’m in need of one. And I’ve been on a moisture regimen for this month and my hair is feeling amazing, I will definitely see how the water with water, oil with oil thing goes. Thanks Ebony, you and your hair are still beautiful. You’re def inspiring me again because I really want my hair to reach your length in a couple of years, but I wasn’t sure if it would be too time consuming, hopefully the Tangle Teezer will cut down on styling time, but do you have any other tips on how to style your hair quickly? And how much time do you spend on your hair each week?

    • Thank you!!!!! You’d actually be surprised to know that I don’t spend much time on my hair anymore. I used to be obsessed! It’s easier now that it’s longer. All I wear are twist outs. I’ll do it once a week or every two weeks depending on how I feel. I re-twist at night and that’s all really. The most I’ve done to my hair lately has been for the Miss NP 2011 contest going on at Going-natural.com.

There’s no real way to style hair quickly unless it’s short or you do it every one to two weeks. I’d just sacrifice a couple hours one evening during the week/weekend and In between time would be quick maintenance. Small (not micro) two strand twists are great to minimize overall styling time and is great for protection. If my hair was shorter I’d still do them, but they take 8 hours now :-(

P.S. You NEED the tangle teezer in your life. It’s a beautiful thing. I love it!!!!

        • I never spray my hair with anything wet once the style is complete. If I do anything, I might use coconut or olive oil every other day on the ends only.

      • Thanks for replying! Yes I will be getting on that Tangle Teezer asap lol. And I’m going to follow your advice and just do more twist outs because they are so easy, but I usually use water to re-twist which causes major shrinkage and takes longer, hopefully just using oil will make my hair look cooler and it will reduce my styling time.
