Meosha // Natural Hair Style Icon

Where do you live?
M:
I was born in G.I. (Gary, Indiana), but I’ve lived most of my life in the South Suburbs of Illinois. You can find me at your local craft store looking for fabrics that POP for my jewelry line on Etsy called 1MeNaturally.

This will forever be my passion, but I’m always on the look out for the next big opportunity.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
M:
Going natural was something I always aspired to do, but never had the courage until now. I grew up with a mother with natural hair whose texture was a lot different than mine. Her hair was silky, curly and fine and nothing like what was growing out of my head.

I was stuck in a chair next to the stove getting my hair cooked on a regular, so getting a perm at a very early age was inevitable. I really didn’t know what being natural meant at the time, but images of women rockin those fly hairstyles always stayed with me. I wanted that to be me.

When and how did you transition into natural hair?
M:
My hair was long and I was BORED. I saw Rihanna’s hair cut in the Take a Bow video and went and got it all chopped off. Problem was my hair grows quickly so my stylist was trying to perm me every 3 weeks so the curls on my kitchen would be smooth! That’s when I decided to go natural. I transitioned for about 3 months by just letting my hair do its own thing and went and got my “Little” Chop in July of 2009.

I feel beautiful and empowered and have experienced so much love. People stop me all the time to ask me about my hair – Men, Women and people of all colors. I even got love for my afro while working in Corporate America. Yes ladies, you can wear a suit and rock a fro!

How would you describe your hair?
M:
My hair is pretty thick and I guess I would be considered a 3C. I’m not too sure about that one. My hair tends to suck up everything that I put in it so I go through a lot of conditioner. I can use a 12oz bottle in 2 days. I don’t experience a lot of shrinkage luckily. My hair gets bigger as it dries. The bigger the better baby!

What’s your regimen?
M:
I was using Giovanni Smooth As Silk products, but they went and changed the formula on me so I’m searching for a new conditioner to use daily that has the same effect. I’m a co-wash and go girl. Those usually last me 2 days. For a really good deep conditioner I use Organics by Africa’s Best Olive Oil Deep Conditioner.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
M:
Going natural does not equal low maintenance and sleeping on wet hair is a big mistake!

What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
M:
Wetting, conditioning and detangling my hair at least every other day. I learned that from YouTuber cynthiarf. I also sleep on a satin pillowcase. Satin hair bonnets dry my hair out and give me major bed head.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
M:
You can find my jewelry on Etsy at http://www.1MeNaturally.Etsy.com and you can come along with me on my hair journey on You Tube – OneMeNaturally. I’m Etsy’s OneMeNaturally on Facebook.

    • Hey Aiden,

Thank you so much for all the luv! U can’t imagine how much I appreciate it. My hair is kinda strange that way. It grows long at the top and on the sides first for some reason so it looks like I got it cut that way. I do clip my ends in an angle though to give a little sumthin extra and I never try to clip the same amount off each section. I just clip whatever needs to go. I think that gives it that look too. Hope this helps!

      • @Aiden, my hair does the same thing as Meosha’s, but I think that hairdressers who notice it tend to give me layers that are longer on top and shorter in the back, if that makes sense. It also works for me b/c my hair on top is a lot looser too.
But you MIGHT be able to get it replicated although it might not last as long for you.

      • Wow, that is very lucky that it grows that way! My hair grows a lot in what i like to call the ‘mohawk section’, while the sides grow slower and shrink more. It makes my hair look like a poofy TWA, in my opinion. LOL! Cutting at an angle seems simple enough, I may try it when my hair gets a little longer. Thanks for the tip!

    • Hey Brianna, Thank You!

I used the Manic Panic Flash Lightning Bleach Kit to bleach it blonde then I colored it with Revlon Colorsilk Hair Color #60 Dark Ash Blonde.

    • Hey Shay,

I was ordering the Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner by the gallon last year and noticed my November shipment smelled different, had a different texture & color. I co-washed with it for 3 days straight & it went from bad to worse. I thought I just got a bad batch so I e-mailed the supplier. They actually wrote me back & let me know they changed some of the ingredients. If you didn’t notice you may have lucked up & purchased some of the old supply or it still works for you – Which is Great!

Wish I could say the same. I did a YT vid on it – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sadp81MJSzc

  3. Yeah the hair looks really good, and it’s so thick. I’m really digging the hair color in picture #3,is that a rinse in it?

    • Thank You! Pic #3 is the color I ended up with after just using the Manic Panic Flash Lightning Bleach Kit. I rinsed it about a month later. That’s why it looks darker in the blowout Pic #2.

  4. Loved the hair too, especially the blonde pics, most of the time when I see naturals go blonde they go for the golden rather than the ash blonde. I’ve been thinking about doing an ash blonde for awhile, and I think I will after seeing how great your hair looks. I also checked out your earrings and loved them, I can’t wait to buy some.

And Leila are you still going to feature Cipriana? I really want to hear about how she does those protective styles.
