Where do you live?
J: I currently live in the DC Metro area and travel consistently to NYC. I will forever rep my hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. I am an office manager/fashion blogger/student/future boutique owner.
Why did you go natural?
J: I was completely bored with my straight relaxed hair. I always loved big hair and was unable to achieve it with my relaxed hair so I decided to transition to natural hair. Also two of my cousins were also natural at the time and I loved their hair.
I begin to transition in June of 2008. I transitioned by co-washing my hair at least 3 days a week and bunning the entire time during my transition. I hated dealing with the two textures and bunning gave me the relief of not having to “deal” with my hair. At month 7 of my transition I was going on a 2 week vacation to California and didn’t want the stress of trying to “style” my hair so 2 days I before departing for my trip I big chopped. I had about 3 inches of hair when I big chopped but because I have a very coily texture it shrunk to less than an inch of hair.
Going natural has improved my self-confidence and and overall self-esteem. I love my natural hair and can truly say I will probably never go back to relaxed hair.
How would you describe your hair?
J: My hair is very coily. Its not thick at all because I have fine textured hair. Even though I have fine strands I can only style it while it is soaking wet. Styling when my hair is dry causes breakage.
What’s your regimen?
J: My current regimen is very simple. I co-wash, detangle and deep condition once a week. I shampoo once a month using Suave Clarifying Shampoo. I use either Hello Hydration or Suave Humectant to co-wash. I use my Jilbere shower comb to detangle while my hair is soaked in conditioner. For a deep conditioner I use either Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose or Giovanni Nutrafix Hair Reconstructor. I use Kinky Curly Knot Today as my leave in Conditioner and use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to two strand twist. After washing and deep conditioning I either bun my hair for that entire week or two strand twist and wear my hair pinned up until the weekend and take down for a twist out.
What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
J: I’ve made the mistake of two strand twisting my hair too small and having to spend hours to detangle.
What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
J: The best thing I do for my hair is not trying to style it differently all the time. I also have never flat ironed my hair and believe that this is why I have retained so much length.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
J: You can find me at my fashion blog: www.flawlessmistake.com.
