5 Reasons Why You Won’t Lose Weight

by ERIKA NICOLE KENDALL of A Black Girl’s Guide to Weight Loss

When I listen to the different comments and e-mails that I receive, there are sometimes things that I want to say, but wont. Why? Because people come here to share and understand that they aren’t alone in the way they think and feel about certain issues regarding wellness and weight loss.

But every now and again, I read something that makes me want to toss my head against my desk – not too hard, but hard enough – because they’re either mistakes I’ve made before… or mistakes I make now (and realize it while reading someone else’s words)… or mistakes I haven’t made and probably would’ve made in the future if I weren’t thinking consciously.

So.. having said that… consider this my collective screaming, shouting, and fussing from a year’s worth of e-mails and comments where y’all just know you are wrong. You know you are. Hopefully you’ll giggle with me a little, and come on out of the woodwork admitting how you know you’re wrong.

I’m especially guilty of #1. I still haven’t made physical activity a habit.

Aww what’s wrong with crystal light?

    • Kari 28 August 2011 at 8:49 am Permalink

Actually there’s nothing wrong with it because it doesn’t have real sugar it in just artifical but you still have to be careful of those too. They should have put kool-aid or soda up there instead.

I don’t think people should necessarily diet but just cut back and eat smarter and healthier. I have gestational diabetes and my nutritionist put me on a eat every two hour “diet” sort to speak. With this eating approach I have lost weight while I am pregnant and my baby is the one that’s gaining the weight. It has not harmed me or my baby at all plus I go to the doctor every week to get LO checked out. I eat breakfast which can be oatmeal or cottage cheese and fruit. Two hours after that I have a midmorning snack which can be fruit and string cheese, yogurt,or simple crackers. Two hours after that I eat lunch which is small for me. To hours after lunch, I eat a snack again which can be anything I had during the first snack and then I eat dinner which is my last meal of the day. I drink water like it’s second nature and I also sometimes drink sparkling water and flavored water as well not not consistently. The doctor took me off all juices, sodas, breads, pasta, and anything that has a heavy carb in it. All I am now is just plain baby and not all the weight I had before. I wasn’t allow to gain but 15lbs but I really didn’t gain that just 15lbs in baby weight. I think I will keep on with this diet change after I have her in September.

5 was funny. But I’m guilty of #4. I havent gave up working out, tho. I’M IN IT!!! Instead of focusing on losing weight, I’m focusing on being stronger. That’s help me not to be downhearted if I dont lose a pound. I’ve gained a couple of pounds. I hope is muscles because I noticed that I can lift heavier weights, do more pushups and last longer. We’ll see….

there are also a whole host of genetic, endocrine, hormonal, metabolic, and thyroid reasons why some of us are heavier. I have PCOS..it is a genertic disorder which affects 8% of women…95% of women with PCOS are obese….there is no cure. I work out 3 hours a week, eat a low card, high protien, HIGH produce diet and I am still obese….i hate the implied stereotype that people fat people are lazy and make unhealthy choices….screw this damn article.

+1 to Monisola about the PCOS which also causes problems with insulin resistance. Then you’re put on meds for that and you have to eat more with the meds to keep from feeling nauseous and lightheaded, so your weight goes up even more (at least that was the case when my doctor tried it with me).

I usually walk around the block everyday for a month now and drink a lot of water before, during and after a meal. Dieting is not for me at all. Drinking water helps I barely drink soda anymore.

I would add one more – count your calories on a site like sparkpeople.com. I found that I wasn’t eating enough: oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast, a salad and sandwich for lunch and some spaghetti for dinner didn’t get me even close to 1000 calories. I was a track & field athlete in college and HS so I know how to exercise. I wasn’t eating junk. Just not eating enough.

I swear to you that after a 3 week hiatus I had made a commitment and re-started my workout routine just before I read this! I’m especially guilty of the procrastinating and the impatience. I’m LMAO AND nodding my head; and ‘yep’ I will absolutely contine now that I’ve read this. Thanks for posting this! So true; and TOO funny!!
