3. Time: Give the conditioner time to soften the strands
After coating every strand, it is necessary to give the conditioner time to soften the hair. A good guide to the time required is to look at your finger tips as you proceed. The conditioner will act on your skin just as much as it does on your hair. You will be able to see your finger tips wrinkle as the skin is softened by the conditioner (similar to the wrinkling that you get with soaking in a bathtub but the conditioner allows this to happen much faster). It will generally take a minimum of 5 minutes before your hair is softened up sufficiently to proceed. Maintain the section by braiding or twisting especially if your hair is prone to high levels of shrinkage. This will ensure that the detangled hair stays detangled.
5. Further detangling
If you wish, you can further detangle as you rinse using the stream of water from the shower to help. In this process, as hair is fully soaking wet, it is quite easy to over-stretch it. To avoid doing this restrict yourself to only the widest tools (i.e fingers only in an ideal situation but if you wish a wide tooth comb can be used).
