Dusu // Natural Hair Style Icon

*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally

Introduce yourself!
I’m Dusuba. I live in Staten Island and go to school in Buffalo. I rep Sierra Leone, Guinea and Saudi Arabia :). I’m a student studying health and wellness.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
Lol I got tired of paying for perms. I’m a broke college student.

When and how did you transition into natural hair?
I stopped using the creamy crack December 09. First I just flat ironed my hair a lot, had a weave, then had braids. Braids were better for the transitioning process because my hair grew way faster than when I had weave in.

In what ways (if any) has going natural affected you?
It is possibly the best decision I’ve made pertaining to my hair. It is easier to deal with, faster and what’s better than playing with your curls? Lol.

How would you describe your hair?
I’ve always had thick hair, but it’s curly. Sometimes it gets too dry, but using oils helps with that.

What is your regimen?
I wash and go a lot of times. I use Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Shampoo and Conditioner, Luster’s S-Curl Activator Moisturizer, Mega Care Carrot & Aloe Oil, Olive Oil and Tea Tree Oil.

Tell us about your hair color?
My hair is brownish red. I can’t describe it Lol. I actually did it myself using two different colors and mixing them together. I used Revlon Color Silk light auburn and strawberry blonde. My texture is still the same, plus I use oils all the time so it keeps it soft.

How do you retain length and moisture in your hair?
My hair is still fairly short. I use leave in conditioners sometimes, Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine or African Shea butter.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
Putting too many chemicals in it arrrggghhh. In high school my hair fell out because I permed, colored and would always flat iron my hair. Once as I was washing my hair it all just came off. It was horrible having to walk around with a bald spot.

What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
I keep it moisturized. It’s the best thing for my hair or it will break.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

Anything else you want to add?
I love my hair now. I regret nothing. Yes there is a going natural phase, but there was also a perming phase. I would like to tell anyone who decides to go natural you have to be patient; it’s not going to happen over night. In the end it will be worth it :).
