Finding a suitable moisturizer for thirsty, fine hair can be a challenge.  Heavy butters and oils can easily weigh down the thin strands.  On the other hand, extremely light moisturizers may not provide adequate moisture.  So what is a girl with thirsty, fine hair to do?  Well, below are four recommended moisturizers for your hair:

1. Oyin’s Hair Dew

WHAT’S IN IT: The Oyin Hair Dew contains purified water (moisture), castor oil (sheen, sealant), olive oil (moisture, sealant), organic aloe vera gel (moisture), and behentrimonium methosulfate (emulsifier, conditioning) among its top five ingredients.

WHY HAIR DEW: The main ingredient in this product is water, which provides ultimate moisture to thirsty hair.  The other ingredients contribute sheen and more moisture while not being too heavy for fine hair.  Those with fine hair may like this product alone or under a light sealant.  This is the lightest moisturizer of the four listed in this article.

WHERE TO FIND: Amazon.com, www.oyinhandmade.com/

2. Curl Junkie’s Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion

WHAT’S IN IT: The Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion contains water (moisture), cetearyl alcohol (emollient, emulsifier), behentrimonium methosulfate (emulsifier, conditioning, moisture), vegetable glycerin (humectant), and elm extract (conditioning) among its top five ingredients.

WHY CURL ASSURANCE: The main ingredient in this product is water, which provides ultimate moisture to thirsty hair. The other ingredients provide moisture retention (glycerin) and conditioning.  Those with fine hair that is a bit thirstier may prefer this over Oyin’s Hair Dew.  This product will not weigh down the hair.

WHERE TO FIND: Amazon.com, www.curljunkie.com

3. Karen’s Body Beautiful Super Silky Leave-in Conditioner

WHAT’S IN IT: The Super Silky Leave-in Conditioner contains purified water (moisture), organic aloe vera juice (moisture), vegetable wax (emollient), organic coconut oil (moisture/sealant), and jojoba oil (sealant) among the top five ingredients.

WHY SUPER SILKY: This is another product with the main ingredient of water, which provides ultimate moisture to thirsty hair.  The other ingredients are combination of moisturizing substances and light oils/wax.  Though the product is called a leave-in conditioner, it can double as a moisturizer.  Like the Curl Assurance, it is also probably more favorable for thirstier fine hair than Oyin’s Hair Dew.

4. Homemade Shealoe Mixture

WHAT’S IN IT: The Shealoe Mixture can be made at home using pure shea butter (emollient, moisture) and pure aloe vera gel (moisture).  The proportions of the mixture for fine hair are 50% shea butter and 50% aloe vera gel.

WHY SHEALOE: This mixture will not weigh down fine hair or leave it feeling greasy like your basic whipped shea butter (whipped with heavy oils).  Mixing shea butter with aloe vera gel allows one to experience the softening and moisturizing properties of shea butter without the heaviness.  Shealoe is ideal for those with fine hair that is extremely thirsty.

I tried a sample size version of Oyin Handmade’s Honey Dew, and I’m in love! Never have my curls ever been treated so well! lol

I LOVE Shea Moisture’s Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé! It’s light weight, but adds moisture, shine and a soft hold! It’s all natural with fabulous ingredients too…water, coconut oil, flax seed gel, agave nectar! It’s my holy grail moisturizer and styling product!

You forgot Shea Moisture’s Curl & Style Milk. That’s also a nice moisturizer that’s completely natural.

KBB sweet ambrosia is hands down my favorite leave-in and I’m one of the thirsty fine-haired folks you mentioned 🙂 I’ve tried 3 Curl Junkie products…no bueno. I don’t think I have it in my to give them anymore money. I do want to try the hair dew next time I need to restock my product closet…maybe around black friday I can get a good deal.

Oyin Hair Dew is the standard by which all of my leave-ins are measured! I just go back to it when all else fails. I do like Curl Junkie Smoothing Lotion, but prefer Curl Junkie Rehab after henna and clay treatments.

I adore B.A.S.K. Silk and Honey Latte! It is very light and s great moisturizer and refresher.

Janet

I love lusters s curl non drip moisturizer! It’s a great leave in as well.

For my fine 4bc hair Qhemet Biologics Burdock root cream did it for me… gave me moisture for days!!!! <i didnt even realise i would be fortunate enough to have ever witnessed that. Coming in a good second place is the Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie. Wonderful that is! I really wanted the smoothing lotion to work by curl junkie but after a while my hair go too used to it (even while on rotation, though my hair was liking the slippery elm in it – the btms and other conditioning agents wernt doing it for me). I got the… Read more »

Alba Botanica Leave In Conditioner! It’ s super moisturizing (and non-greasy), super slippery, and affordable ($5.58, iherb.com).

I tried SM curl enhancing smoothie but my hair hates it. It just becomes a greaseball. Still in search of a good moisturizer for my 4a hair, maybe i’ll try Nap85’s whipped shea butter recipe, as my hair likes raw shea butter with some leave in underneath

Titi

A question concerning the Homemade Shealoe Mixture. If I do it at home, I won’t have to seal my hair afterwards since there is already shea butter in it, right? And by the way, how often is one to moisturize? Because when I have styles like twists or sort, moisturizing my hair often will make the style look frizzy much too soon.
Thanks in advance!

J

The key is to listen to your hair and moisturize according to that.

The mixture should keep your hair moisturised for a few days then after that you can wet your hair with a spritz bottle and re-apply until the day you wash your hair.

For your twists i would suggest applying a bit of olive oil on the ends and sleeping with a satin cap. I hope that is helpful.

J

*keeps my hair happy.

Water is the best and i am looking for a commercial moisturiser so this is helpful as i ran out of the one i used to use and they don’t make it any more! 🙁

I simply wet my hair lightly with water when it needs a moisture boost and apply either a light oil like EVOO or Creamy Cafe Latte.

On wash day i also use Creamy Cafe Latte as a leave-in to seal my hair and it does a good job.

I find this works for me as what i use on wash day keeps my hair

I LOVE Oyin! The Honey Hair Dew is my absolute fav. Perfect everyday moisturizer and never causes build up.

I’ve been using Oyin Hair Dew for more than a year now. My hair loves it because she absolutely hates anything feeling heavy and weighed down.

Natalee

I like Curl Junkie and Oyin, but recently started using Reve Essentials Hair and Body Moisturizer…W-O-W! Its a fantastic light moisturizer and can be used as a leave in too.

One of my most favorite moisturizers for dry, fine hair is Darcy’s Botanicals Peach Kernel Hydrating Milk because it is creamy enough to hydrate the hair but light enough to where it doesn’t weigh the hair down or cause it to feel sticky or greasy. It also provides moisture that lasts and doesn’t evaporate into thin air like some products tend to do. Another added bonus that I’ve found personally is that it has helped thicken my hair up in a few areas around my hairline that were a little thinner. Love it!

I find the Curl Cream from Curls Unleashed with a lil bit of coconut oil goes a long way for me. I got a sample a while back & finally purchased the actual size. So far so good

Bernadette
I haven’t used any of these moisturizers. In the past 3 years, I typically make my own concoction with oils & a commercial leave-in. I’m beginning to see that it isn’t as effective as it used to be, so I may need to switch it up. May need to check out one of these products. But, in general, if I can’t find a product in one of my local stores, I won’t purchase. I’m not much of an online shopper. 🙁 Perhaps, I should branch out and try something new! I’m starting to run, and I have noticed my hair… Read more »

I have used both Oyin’s Hair Dew and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and find they both work pretty good, but I am still searching for the ultimate moisture for my fine strands. I find the Dew a little too light at times and the curl enhancing smoothie a bit too heavy. Going to try the homemade shealoe mixture next. Thanks you so much for the information!

Laura

I’m in love with Shea Moisture Curl and Style Milk. It has no ability to hold, but it’s light enough to not leave a film hours after I’ve applied it. My hair is fine and 4a, as an fyi.

honeybrown1976

I use this as a leave-in, not a moisturizer, for my wet hair. I love that it’s not heavy or filmy, which I detest.

Inf

Yup…in my rotation. And no glycerine, so a must have in the colder months.

Bridget

Now that you mention it, I do remember trying and liking it before when I received a small container of it with the SM trial kit. Not sure why I have never purchased a full size of it. Probably b/c everyone always hypes up the SM curl enhancing smoothie. Definitely going to pick up a bottle of it soon. Thank you so much!

Laura

Glad to help!

I love Karen’s Super Silky and the Hair nectar…i would add Reve Hair & Body mOisturizer too.

Inf

That’s on my list to try. I hear great things about it.

From this list, i’ve only tried KBB and I absolutely love it! But my favorite will forever be Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Not sure if it’s for fine haired curlies , but i’m a mixture of medium and fine hair, and the smoothie is light and creamy enough to moisturize my hair, and keep it that way for a few days, which is why I love it!

Inf

I love Oyin’s Hair Dew and Curl Junkie’s smoothing lotion. Just got hip to it recently by one of the youtubers I subscribe to. Shea Butter does nothing in terms of moisture for my hair.
