K: Hi! My name is Kristin Brooks, a Pennsylvania native living an hour north of Philly. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Business and Songwriting. I am a lifestyle blogger, but I also work in marketing at a day prep school in my area, as well as involved in their music program throughout the year. I basically get to play with social media (which I love) for my job and my blog on a daily basis. It’s great! I also work part time as a server at a fine dining restaurant called Melt!
How long have you been natural?
K: I’ve been natural since sophomore year of high school (’03-’04), so about nine years now!
How and why did you transition into natural hair?
K: I kept seeing all these Black women in commercials and in magazine ads with natural, curly hair. I wanted my hair to be able to do the same! So I made the decision to stop getting relaxers. Once I had an inch of new growth I had the rest of my relaxed hair cut off! However, once I had this new natural hair on my head, I didn’t know how to take care of it. I did all this research online and tried looking at forums for help. Unfortunately at that time, there wasn’t any information readily available online on how to take care of natural hair, nor did I find product suggestions, nor hairstyle tutorials like today! I went through a lot of trial and error for the first couple years, but I have it on lock now! Lol
What are your must-have products for shampooing, conditioning and styling your hair?
K: I am loving One n’ Only Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. LOVE! I love the smell, there are no harsh chemicals like sulfates, mineral oil, or parabens/silicones in them, and they just work well with my hair! Their conditioner is the truth! It INSTANTLY detangles my hair! And I need a great conditioner to detangle my thick, coily hair!
I usually shampoo and condition my hair in the shower, although I turn off the water in the shower when I detangle. No need to waste water! Plus it takes me a good 5 minutes or so anyway!
As for moisturizing products, I love African Royale Leave-In Conditioner. It’s one of the first products I used when I went natural, and stuck with it ever since. It’s super moisturizing, and makes my hair smell like juices and berries! For gels, I love Proclaim hair gel (the clear gel with the green top), and Eco Styler Gel with Olive Oil. To oil my scalp I use Jamaican Black Castor Oil or One n’ Only Argan Oil. For a finishing product, I use Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine. It smells so good!
What is your signature hairstyle?
K: At this point, I’d say a flat twist-out on stretched hair is my signature. It’s my favorite natural hairstyle!
Did going natural affect your style choices at all?
K: Honestly it didn’t. I think my hair more so compliments my style now than it did before, because I am truly myself. I’m not trying to fit in, I’m just being me!
Your style incorporates a bit of the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. Give us some tips on the types of pieces one can select to bring these eras to life in their wardrobe.
K: When I think of eras, I think of the staple pieces that defined that era. If we’re talking about the 70’s, wide legged jeans and bold/funky prints are the first things that come to my mind. I love the 70’s and am always incorporating that era into my daily style. You can keep it trendy by pairing the jeans with a trendy top or blouse. Or you could always go for the 70’s esque bold top and keep your bottom half with skinny jeans or something that is of the current trend. I always try to find classic pieces that will never go out of style so that I can wear them for a long period of time, in various combinations.
If you’re afraid to go too much out of your comfort zone, but want to incorporate trends or other styles into your wardrobe, start with your accessories. There’s always a popular color, fabric, or design each season, and if you want to add that trend without overdoing it, always go for the accessories! That way, you can see if the trend is for you without having to commit too much to it!
Lastly, don’t think too hard! When I pull an outfit together, it usually comes to me when I’m not thinking about it. Most times at the last minute! And that’s what keeps it exciting for me. I’ll usually start with one item in my closet that I know I want to wear, and think of ways to pair that one item to create an ensemble. I rarely pick out outfits ahead of time because I like to challenge myself creatively! Keeps the juices flowing!
What are the three favorite things in your closet?
K: Ooh this is a toughy. My turquoise and sterling silver ring. It’s the only ring I wear on a daily basis. I currently love my Zara denim skinny jeans; they are my go-to pair. Lastly, my Gap denim cropped jean jacket. I’ve had it for years, and it will never go out of style! It’s perfect for cool summer nights, and it matches everything!
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
