*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally
E: Rashina Sjogren and I am from New Jersey. I am 28 years old and I’m Panamanian.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
E: I went natural because relaxers made my hair extremely dry and tangly. I never needed one to begin with really, my hair is just so thick I was looking for a rescue! I’ve been natural for 7 years and counting.
How would you describe your texture?
E: My hair is predominantly 3c with some strands of 3a, 3b and 4a. My hair needs lots of moisture. Even though I am natural, I straightened my hair all through the winter months. Earlier this year I discovered that using the flat iron ruined my curl pattern and since, I have been working really hair to get beautiful curls back. My hair is unique in its a complete mixture of fine and coarse strands. My hair is extremely thick and very dense.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
E: I have no particular regimen. Since my curl pattern was quite damaged when I went to wear my hair curly this summer, I have been doing twist outs for the last 4 months straight. No wash and go’s at all. Well, maybe once! lol I am a true product junkie so I like to try my twist outs with different products each time. I like to use a leave in conditioner for my twist out (Knot Today, Infusium 23 or Mixed Chicks) and will put a heavier cream moisturizer or curling cream like Curls Unleashed Curl Defining Creme, as well as coconut oil for sealing and Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly to finger curl the ends with. I’ve tried a twist out with Shea Moisture Curling Smoothie, but it only looked nice on the very first day. After that it was very frizzy. I usually do this once every 6 to 7 days. I will leave the twist in for the first 1–3 days depending on my mood and how I can style them. Then when I take them out, I wear my hair out until it starts to frizz on the 5th day and I will wear a loose bun on the last day before I wash again! At night I re twist but only in 4 big sections and I always always wear my pink satin head wrap/bonnet durag ma bob! It’s my best bud!
What does wash day look like for you?
E: I have recently just started to pre poo with my favorite item — raw coconut oil. I also use this as a moisturizer and sealant. I take a generous amount and melt between my palms by rubbing them together for about 10 seconds until it completely liquefies. I rake this through my hair. I leave it on all day through my daily activities or through the night, but just rock a bun so it doesn’t look too greasy. I alternate between co washing with whatever good conditioner I have around (again I am a product junkie). I have Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner, my fav co wash of all time! I have some Carol’s Daughter lying around, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask. I’ve even used V05 Moisture Milks a few times! lol And I also wash with sulfate free shampoo when I am not co washing. Curls Sulfate Free Shampoo is currently on deck for that!
I detangle with a large flat brush. I tried the finger combing thing for a while but honestly, with all the hair have, it just was not for me. It was a mess and I am gladddd that’s over! So I’m back to my flat brush. And detangling while co washing is sooo simple and tangle free. I usually do it in 4 sections while the water is still running through it from the shower head. I start at my ends and work my way up the strand making sure to detangle the roots as well. I deep condition with again whatever new product I have purchased and around. I’ve made my own with avocado and olive oil. That was AHHHH-MAAAAAY-ZING! Spelled just like that :) I use Olive Oil treatments in the little pouches from the Beauty Supply store and they are just as good, but not as raw and natural. Since my curl pattern was a mess, I also incorporated a light protein treatment by Aphogee called 2 minute Keratin Reconstructor. This has seemed to help but I’ve only done it twice, being sure not to overdose in the protein as it could have an adverse effect and that’s a No No! I do not use heat to deep condition, but I use steam instead. I wash once every 5–7 days and that about sums up that fiasco of an event. Oh and it definitely takes a few hours! :)
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
E: I am so simple dimple. My go to hairstyle is a bun. I work in an office setting and can’t afford for my hair to look too crazy. A bun can be worn high, low, in the middle or even on the side for various looks.
How do you combat shrinkage?
E: I don’t really combat shrinkage. My hair shrinks according to the products I use. Because my hair is extremely long, shrinkage does not bother me really at all!
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
E: The top, very center of my hair is very coarse. I believe this is where I have some 4a strands. The texture is just super dry and I always have to put extra product there.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
E: Well I’ve learned that moisture is my hair’s best friend for soft beautiful tresses that everyone will compliment you on!
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
E: My texture does not like Gel of any sort. Maybe on the ends a little for control but other than that it dries it out, even when put over a leave in conditioner.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
E: I do not have a blog or webpage about my hair, but I’m alwaysssss posting pictures of my hair concoctions and results on my Instagram. You can find me at pictureperfecct.
