Introduce yourself!
K:
I am Kimberly Nettles, a graduating pharmacy student currently attending Florida A&M University. I was born in Mobile, Alabama, however I currently reside in South Florida. In addition, I have started a natural hair care line with my mom called Dr Nettles Natural Beauty.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
K:
I have been natural since birth. However I just recently devoted the time to keeping my hair healthy by using clean, organic products. I realized how much damage I had accumulated over the years. My ends were split from heat damage, and my texture was dry from lack of moisture. Once I started embracing my natural texture and steering away from bad beauty habits, I saw an instant transformation in my hair! Also, being a future health care professional, I like to stress the importance of what you put inside your body directly reflects on the outside. If you only eat junk food and never exercise, you’ll notice your skin, hair, and nails don’t look as great as they could. The best beauty tip is understanding that it begins with treating your body right!

How would you describe your texture?
K:
3c thick hair! When I learned to stop trying to fight what my hair wants to do and learn to accept its natural texture and curl pattern, it made a world of a difference. My hair is the healthiest it has ever been.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
K:
Currently I like to style my hair in a twist out. I two strand twist my hair and curl my hair on the end with a perm rod. I like to sleep with them in because when I wake up in the morning, my hair looks great and the curl pattern holds better. However I attribute a lot of styling my hair with the products that I use: the Dr Nettles Beauty product line. The products use 100% organic and natural ingredients and are created for overall hair health, growth, and restoration! My mother (a Pharmacist) and I created the products when we noticed that many products on the market had harsh chemicals that strip and damage your hair! I suggest to anyone that needs to revitalize their hair to try our products: www.drnettlesbeauty.com.

What does wash day look like for you?
K:
I wash about every 3 weeks now; however I try to co-wash (just using conditioner about once a week). I use Dr Nettles shampoo and conditioner. It’s stimulating and you can feel the products working while you use them! There is an awesome tingling sensation from the rosemary and nettle herb.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
K:
A wash and go is always great. I’ve learned to embrace messy hair, and other people love it. However, if I’m looking for something a little sleeker, I brush my hair back into a bun. I am drawn to anything low maintenance. I hate spending hours on my hair, so I’m always looking for simple ways to style my hair.

How do you combat shrinkage?
K:
I usually try to stretch my hair using bantu knot blow outs. I simply use a wide tooth comb, quickly comb out my hair with a blow dryer, and then style as usual. I sleep in the bantu knots, and when I wake up I find that my hair is much longer, but still has great body.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
K:
My main concern is making sure my hair is healthy. Therefore, I’m more willing to put the time and effort into keeping my hair strong and thick, rather than making sure my hair is styled by using hot appliances every day. I believe in being proactive, therefore if you take the time to take care of your hair, you won’t have to worry about big problems in the future.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
K:
Moisture, moisture, moisture!

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
K:
No combing while you hair is dry (you’ll ruin your curl pattern).

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

[…] Style Icon KimberlyAgain, depending on the technique and maintenance of this style it can be a “safe” out style or one that leads to tangles. If you want the style to last through the work week I recommend  medium and small sections.  At night you can put your hair in a high loose ponytail which will stretch the style a bit without ruining the waves and curls. In the morning you will want to make sure you apply a light oil to the ends to limit knots.  When the hair needs refreshing you can place it into large knots… Read more »

Damn it, it looks like I’m too late to ask questions! :( If anyone sees this, can you tell me how to style my hair like she has in the picture with the glasses and red lipstick? That is my ideal style, it’s so gorgeous.

Dallas

…and I love her red lip!

Felicia

You’re beautiful! I’m definely going to check out your line if products! It’s ironic that your products are named after both the herb and your family name :)

Ashley

In that top-left, black-and-white pic, she looks like Taren916! Beautiful!

Jumoké

Question for BGLH- how does she have “long hair”? Most of the females with her hair length have medium length…

You made it to BGLH!!! I first saw Kimberly on curlynikki.com and decided to visit the website for their products, I will be ordering soon! Its also really cool to see that you’re a Soror! OO-OOP! You and your hair are beautiful and I think its super awesome that you and your mother created your own line of products, especially with the knowledge that you have of pharmacy. Very inspiring! Ya’ll go ‘head! Always great to see Black people take the reins with products that affect us!

Gorgeous hair!

D.K.

I am so glad that you started your own product line based on the fact that harsh and harmful chemicals are found everywhere and in most every day products. It’s like you can’t get away from it sometimes! I agree with you on many points and will definitely be visiting your website. Plus, absolutely beautiful pics. You look stunning!
