Dara // 4A/B Natural Hair Style Icon

Introduce yourself!
My name is Dara Michelle and I’m from Virginia.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
I’ve been natural my whole life, and I’ve always put my hair in twists so I decided to get locks because I thought they were gorgeous and would be easier to manage.

How would you describe your texture?
My hair I’d say is 4a/4b texture. It is mixed throughout my hair, which affected how my hair locked (some parts locked faster than others) and it is very thick throughout.

What method was used to start your locs?
The method of locks I had put in was sisterlocks. I went to a consultant to get them installed. I stopped counting my locks at around 300.

How do you style your locs?
I use Lottabody Texturizing Setting Lotion when I style my hair to hold my curls and crinkles. I lovvveeeeee this product. It lasts for a few weeks and it is pretty much the only product I use.

What does wash day look like for you?
I do a baking soda cleanse every month to keep my locks fresh. Weekly I wash my hair with Avalon Organics Shampoo and Conditioner Tea Tree Mint Therapy.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
I need to keep my hair conditioned since I have small locks and they can fall out easier.

What are 2 do’s for your locs?
2 do’s: Keep conditioned, and maintained so they don’t get matted together.

What are 2 don’ts for your locs?
2 don’ts: Pulling hair to tight weakens roots, and letting them get really dry.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

  1. Beautiful hair! Seriously considering relocing. I eventually forgot why I locked in they’d first place. Loose hair takes so much time and effort!

  2. I have really been considering getting locs for a while now, it just looks so awesome. I love your hair color and the locs itself, this definitely motivated me to get on my loc game.

  3. Nice to see some locs around here, again. Looks very nice. I have locs, myself and I doubt i’ll EVER go back to loose, natural hair. As much as i loved my fro, it was too much to deal with maintenance-wise. Kudos to you for having so many locs, too!! 300?? Geez-louise, that’s alotta locs, lol. Makes my measly 72 look like nothing. All around awesome, though. Keep it up.

  4. I LOVE locs, but i don’t think they are an option for me because my hair looks scalpy when in two strand twists…so i guess i will just admire from afar :)
    Pretty locs and beautiful woman!

    • I too have fine hair. I got thick locs (I loc’d in August 2012. I have about 55-60 locs) partially for that reason: to thicken up my hair. If you are interested in locs, I don’t think you should shy away from getting locs for fear of your hair looking thinner. Trust me, hair cannot look thinner than free hair if all your shed hair remains on your head!

  5. I have been in love with sisterlocks for thee longest time. Do you remember what size yours are? They look to be about the size I’m hoping to get.
