Tika Sumpter Takes to Twitter After Mother Jailed Over $10 Library Fine

Most of us have been guilty of not returning books to the local library at some point in our lives. In fact, I signed out a book about toads in 1994 and had to pay for the book when I returned to the same library in 2007. What can I say, time got away, but I never expected to be arrested for an overdue library book or for an unpaid library fine. But according to actress Tika Sumpter this is what happened to her mother, Janice Acquista, on Monday.

Sumpter says that Janice was arrested and jailed in North Carolina because she had overdue library books with a $10 late fee. The ordeal was so unbelievable that even the police station couldn’t believe why Janice, a 60 year-old retired corrections officer, was thrown in prison. Janice has never been in trouble with law and served her community through corrections for many years. Tika’s fans couldn’t believe that anyone could be arrested for something as simple as a $10 fine and asked the actress several times if she was serious. She was.

Apparently, fines and notices no longer suffice. The Smithfield Library in North Carolina issues warrants for overdue books. North Carolina isn’t the only state that will put you in handcuffs for overdue library materials. Texas, Washington State, and Iowa have all arrested people for the same crime. It doesn’t end there. Some libraries will even report you to the credit bureau for overdue books and unpaid fines, likely destroying both your life and your credit.

Tika’s mother has been released, but the actress reminded everyone that this unbelievable event is why it’s important to not only vote during the presidential election, but to vote during local elections as well. To add insult to injury Janice actually returned the book a while ago, but the library never put it in the system.

  1. So what do you get if you are falsely arrested?? Seems like the system should pay this woman the money that they stood to make off of her.

  2. that’s why the USA is a country I would never move in. You can get arrested so easily and for anything and you can easily end up dying if you are a person of color.
