Success with the LOC Method??

I'm debating trying the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream to seal), but it seems like a lot of product. After years of having oil stains on my couch and my pillow, I'm trying to use less product. But at the same time, my hair is very highly porous and I need a good seal!! Have any of you tried the LOC method? Did it work for you? Do you suggest any modifications? Do tell!!

I Love the loc method especially when I baggy. I do modify mine the L= a little bit of water ran through my hair with my fingers and my moisturizer usually Shea Moisture CES, O= Castor oil or whatever butter I may have C= Shea Moisture CES. I have tried various variations but this is what I always end up coming back to with the most positive results. Combined with the baggy/ghe I can get away with moisturizing my hair every other day.

I did modify my LOC method because my porous hair was sucking up the oil to quickly. I use Liquid first, which is my Garnier Fructis Hydra Recharge Moisture Whip (btw, I tried to use just water, but this product works so well with my hair and keep it extra moisturized, and its water based!) Then I apply my Cream, either Nubian Heritage Styling Custard, or Shea Moisture Curl and Style. And to finish I use an Oil, which is castor oil mixed with my cermacide oil blend! HTH

I've been using the LOC method for over a year and I must say that my hair loves it. My hair is always moisturized. My liquid of choice is water (that's freesmile), I seal with extra virgin olive oil (or jojoba oil if I have it), and my cream of choice is Kinky Curly Knot Today. I then use a moisturizer/styler to style my hair. I am quite heavy handed with products and I don't have oil stains all over my furniture and clothing so I say give it a shot. You may have to try if for a while to start to see and feel the results but I think it's something worth trying.

I use this method but I work with dry stretched hair typically.

Wash > Deep Condition > Blow Dry/Stretch > Moisturize/Leave-in > Twist w/ Butter > Seal w/ Oil

Question could I add oil to my water to kind of kill two birds with one stone, or does it have to be water then oil??

@Mona It would be water than oil. If you mix the water and oil together you have no way of know if the water is touching your strands before the oil, which is very necessary. If you put oil on before the water, the water will just bead off your hair because oil repels water and water is the moisturizer in the LOC method, and oil seals in that moisture.

@Mona Trust me any time I can be lazy I take it. I usually stay in my DC for hours because washing it out takes so much energy lol.

@Samantha….do you think adding the aloe vera would help in reducing frizz? My hair is so frizzy before I add product it's no joke.

I been doing this on my daughter's hair and it works great. I use water, then EVOO, grape seed oil, coconut oil, them a palmers cream leave in conditioner. Her hair stays soft and moisture much longer now.

The L.O.C. moisture method was THE technique that turned my hair around for the better. That along with protective styling is the best. (I even made a video about it).

I don't modify it (although, sometimes I add a tad bit of extra oil at the end). I use Hawaiian Silky Moisture and Sheen for the liquid, jojoba oil for the oil, and Kinky Curly Knot Today for the cream.

@HOPEsaidit …..I agree completely. The LOC method has made a huge difference in the look and feel of my hair. I was experiencing super dry hair after I did the BC and it wasn't until I fully embraced the LOC method did I stop having issues with dry hair.

It is all about get your porosity to a normal level. Once you work on your porous issues you will not have a need to do a LOC method nor M&S. I never M&S on my tightly coily thought by many to be the driest hair. I only apply a cream moisturizer about every 3 to 5 days. My hair stays soft and moisturized and growth really well. Work on how your hair retains moisture that is the key. The only thing I apply daily is a natural oil either, EVOO, CO, grapeseed oil or avocado oi.

@VeeCoily ….I have normal porosity and still use the LOC method because it works the best for my hair. I find that doing the LOC method is the best way to moisturize my hair when it needs moisturization. And in doing so, I only have to moisturize my hair every few days as well so I don't think that having to/choosing to use the LOC method is a result of non normal hair porosity.

Normal healthy hair should not require all that product daily when we have normal sebum production. Now many due to diet and other issues do not have normal sebum production so they may need the extras. Also a healthy diet of fruits and veggies help, along with the amount of water ones drinks daily. All of these things deal with how healthy normal your hair and skin will be. Normal porosity hair that is retaining moisture should not need a layering of products. So we will disagree on this one issue. When I see LOC method and M&S people are doing this daily and that should not be necessary on healthy hair. (I did not say you were doing this daily, just generally speaking). Folks get your porosity normal and your hair healthy and you will not need these methods daily. Afro hair is not that complicated and foreign. Also remember as you get older your sebum production slows down so just adding a natural oil daily will make a huge difference…..Nice discussion and I have shared my professional opinion. Stay blessed!

@Jodi-Ann P I totally agree. When I do the LOC method, I don't have to moisturize as often. Prior to that, I had heard of naturals not having to moisturize daily, and I didn't believe it. It really was a game changer for my hair.

@nkfd …..it really helped me as well. I can go all week without having to re-moisturize but I do it every 3 days or so just because I want to make sure I stay on top of things and don't fall into bad hair habits.

This sounds like a very good idea. I love a good leave in conditioner, does it leave the hair dull? Most do thats why I avoid using them. My hair doesn't respond to Shea Butter, has anyone notice this too?

@Jodi-Ann P I just saw this old at from February! I don't see any reduction in frizz from my water aloe mix versus just water alone. It might be because it's more like a 80-20 ratio of water to aloe vera gel. I think it might be worth a shot with a higher ratio. Perhaps I'll set up an experiment and get back to you on it!

@goodmannersnothair, my hair doesn't respond to shea butter either, no matter how hard I've tried to like it.

@shepptacular …maybe you should try aloe vera juice instead of the gel and make it a 1:1 ratio of each and see if that helps. You might have to play with the amount of aloe vera juice to get a ratio that works well for your hair.

@goodmannersnothair….my hair hates pure shea butter. But I can use products that contain shea butter. I say if your hair doesn't like it, don't force it.
